Gt.Gt.Grandfather Thomas Whitney..
« on: Thursday 28 October 10 17:42 BST (UK) »
Hi, my Gt. Gt. Grandfather was called Thomas Whitney of Llanblethian, near Cowbridge.  He died in 1890 and he is buried in Ramoth Baptist Chapel in Cowbridge.  He had 12 children, and I feel that I must have quite a lot of relatives in that area.  It would be great to hear from anyone who thinks they may be related to me.

I am hoping that it is not unappropriate to ask this.  If so, I am sure that someone will tell me.

Thanks,

Diana

Hi Cardiff, thanks for putting me right about all the information, and going to all that trouble.  You have the correct family.

Hi jwls,  I am quite excited to read that I may have found someone who is researching the same family as me.  Thomas Whitney was born 4th October, 1818. There seems to be some discrepancy with the dates, but I feel this is the right one, as I found his grave at Ramoth Baptist Chapel, Cowbridge, and he died 29th April, 1890, which would make the 1818 birth correct.  He was born in Wolvesnewton, Monmouthshire and his parents were David Whitney (Witney) & Mary (nee Prichard). They married 26th December, 1812 in Wolvesnewton.  Hope that this is enough information for you to know if it is the same family, if not I can send you more.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Kind Regards Di

My Whitney's are Rachel Whitney bn 1862 Merthyr daughter of John Whitney bn 1843 Carmarthen. John was son of William Whitney bn 1816 Carmarthen,
Whitney was not a very common name for this part of Wales at this time, so I pressume that Williams parents came from elsewhere!!!!

Hi Juls, its not looking like we have family in common then.  As I said, Thomas Whitney was son of David Whitney.  David was born in Orcop, Hereford,  in 1792.  He had 2 brothers, John - born Orcop 1791 and Thomas - born Orcop 1793.  Their parents were David Whitney & Susan (nee Watkins) who were married in Parish of St. John in the city of Hereford 9th February 1790. I havn't discovered as yet if there were any more children born to the marriage.  I have to take a trip to Hereford Record Offices hopefully sometime soon, as they have very comprehensive Parish Registers, and have a good dig around.  I live in Lincolnshire now, so it is a long journey for me.

Hi Diana

My Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was the David Whitney of Orcop.  The line I have comes through David (b 1811) and brother to your Thomas (b 1818).  Worth taking a look at the Whitney Research Group (http://wiki.whitneygen.org/wrg/index.php/Main_Page). I've put my line on this and happy to share what I have with you. :)
