It seems it ceratainly existed see:
http://www.geog.port.ac.uk/webmap/thelakes/html/lgaz/lk06682.htm
But It doesn't quite pinpoint it
I do know that the area known as Hawksdale covered the area between Rose castle and the modern day bridge end ... I'll have a bit trawl through the directories I have tomorrow and see if I can tell you any more
Cradduck, Little, Butler, Cockbain, Joughin, Johnston, Fisher and Ion - all Whitehaven Cumberland.
Hope - Carlisle and Cumberland.
Aitken, Bell, McNeille - Dumfries and Kirkcudbrightshire and or Ireland.
Bryan/t Oxfordshire and Lancashire/Cheshire

As an afterthought, what was the name of your ancestor? might help with the trawl through the directories
