Ayrshire Newspapers
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 10:02 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of any Ayrshire newspaper archives searchable on-line?   The years I am looking for are 1860 and 1898.

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion - no luck there unfortunately.  The incidents in question took place in the Coylton/Stair area.

The Ayrshire Post archives in Ayr Library go from 1880 to date, The Ayr Advertiser goes from 1803 to date and the Ayr Observer goes from 1832 to 1930.
I was in there today looking at the Post. I may be going back next week, so If you know the exact month and year that it was published,(as that makes it just 4 papers to go through) I MAY be able to look it up for you, as you have to search each paper manually page by page on microfiche, and costs 20p. to print a copy. I just took a photo with my camera of a paper copy, but I don't know if it would be good enough taking a photo from microfiche screen.
Just let me know.

Hiya,

I too have wanted to search the Ayr newspapers for a mining accident at the beginning of the 1900s. I'm so far from Ayr (in Brighton!) that somebody at the Carneigie Library did the research for me out of the kindness of their heart and posted me copies of what they found.

You could try giving them a ring and asking them to do the research for you, although it's nowhere near as rewarding as doing it yourself sometimes that just isn't practical!

Hope this helps, Gill
