The Register 30 Oct 1861

PORTER HOLLINGSWORTH - On the 28th Oct near Athelstone by licence by Mr W R Squibb officiating minister, George son of Thomas PORTER Esq of Norwich England to Christian relic of the late Peter Hollingsworth of Hope Valley.

Try the newspapers - looks like lots of mentions re poor relief. I am having internet speed woes this week so will leave you with it.

Under McDonald - In the colony 5 years widow about 6 months 5 children

Under Hollingsworth

Now under Porter I see she was abandoned.

1863 she was refused rations having only one child under 10

Hi Kris,
Thank you for the excellent info. Its amazing what you have managed to find.
Sound like Christy did not have a very good life in oz. It is still a mystery re the children.  She seems to have a few extra but I wonder if they were the children of the husbands.
I appreciate all the time you have spent on this Kris. I will now go and do some searching of the newspapers.
  Kind Regards
mariac

Hi mariac,

Sorry I can't find another thing about these children. As you say different information in each mention but alas no names.

Looking at the destitute asylum one even IF the 3 boys are those we know of there has to be a daughter somewhere. I can't find anything on any of them. I expect that some may go missing but all of them. Even if she had other children who were not registered normally we would find marriages or deaths to help but I see nothing. (under any of her names.)

Peter had been previously married and had 4 sons. His BISA entry is very like Donald's - really just information from shipping.

I see the lines from Ezra and Samuel continue but not seeing the other two.

Looks like Peter deserted her at one stage also.

23 Aug 1860

List of women receiving relief on Jun 30 1860 who's husbands had deserted them or were in gaol

HOLLINGSWORTH Christina  residence Highercombe 3 Children arrived on the Hercules period of husbands absence Five weeks.

I know McDONALD is terribly common and Alexander could prove difficult but the other two I had hopes for. I even wondered if that death in 1885 age may have been wrong age in index but no -  that Rory was in the asylum also. When I saw that I realised what DDA from the record you found meant. Deaths in Destitute asylum. I think the returns went in quarterly so probably in Jan 1886 the returns were lodged for Oct, Nov, Dec. 1885. Rory died in the asylum in Oct. He had been brough down from Pt Pirie and his arrival in the colony was into Vic. He had senile decay so certainly a different Rory. There are many mentions of McDONALD's from the HERCULES in the asylum records - some were children but no first names in first year one saying mother in gaol. I wondered until I saw just how many McDONALD's were aboard that ship so I think these were other people. Sorry I've gone through it all again and I still see nothing at all on the children.  :-\

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris,
Yes it is hard to believe that not one of the children can be found anywhere.  ???  Another one for  the too hard basket for the time being.
I have spent hours going through newspapers but to no avail. Other than the destitute asylum ones.
You mentioned Christy was buried 28/7/1873 WTC.
What does the WTC stand for? Iam presuming its a cemetery. I would very much doubt if she would have a headstone.
Thanks to you I certainly know a lot more now then when I started.
 Kind Regards
mariac

Hi mariac,

Sorry - It's West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide. No I would not think
there would be a stone. I would assume a paupers grave as she was in the asylum.

I have just started researching Peter Hollingsworth's family, and was wondering if he was the same one who married Christy McDonald (McKenzie) - now I know!  I have sorted out all his family if you are interested.

Hi there Trying,
I have not been able to establish if the Norman who came out on the Hercules in 1852 is my Henry Norman or not so I have not gone any further with this line.
If your info has extra info I would be very interested.
 Regards
mariac
