The Barracks West Derby
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 21:24 BST (UK) »
My Grandad's sister married John Rushton in 1895 and had their first child in 1896, their abode was Eaton's Cottage, Deysbrook Lane,West Derby.  They then had a fruther 3 children, 1898, 1906 and 1909, their abode at time of their baptism's was 5  The Barracks.  I understand there were barracks in Deysbrook Lane and Tesco's is now where it was situated.  I am puzzled as to why there were barracks in 1898 in West Derby and why John Rushton who was a labourer, would be living at number 5.  Does anybody have any ideas?  Many thanks

Hi I remember deyesbrook barracks I used to do maintenance there for a security firm in the 1970s they used to repair military vehicles there the barracks were quite large think 3 storeys for the military personnel think it was a regular army unit rather than TA ,they probably had civilian maintenance staff who lived on site hence the address have you tried googling the barracks to find regiment based there? possibly REME  or artillery-----Chris

The Barracks was off West Derby Village with an entrance by the side of the "Hare and Hounds". They backed onto the gardens of two large houses in Hayman's Green. It is shown on the reprinted 1906 OS plan for West Derby available from Alan Godfrey Maps. It was probably on the site of an old barracks. You will need to look for a history of the village. The numbers go up to 34.

btw...the directory shows Heaton Cottages in Deysbrook Lane, so maybe you ancestor dropped the H when registering the birth.
