All born Stanhope and living there in 1851
Collingwood
Margaret, Pauper, Wid, 46
Thomas, son, Iron Stone Miner, 22
Joseph, 12, lead ore washer,
Margaret, 12,
William, 10, lead ore washer
John, 5
In 1841 Stanhope the same family have Joseph 35, coal miner, born in the county. Not sure if this is the family you are looking for.
However I can't find a marriage for Joseph and Margaret.

I am linked into but not related to the Stanhope Collingwoods. I have the Collingwoods from George who died 1730 at Boltsburn, Rookhope, Stanhope and was buried Stanhope 10 OCT 1730. Nearly the last Collingwood I have is a Joseph born 1 AUG 1805, and bap. 4 AUG 1805, Stanhope son of George Collingwood and Margaret Elliot. The naming pattern looks reasonalby good for the family on the 1841 and 1851 Census as a brother of George (1805) was named John.

Louisa - good luck with it, but just to add to the confusion:

I have a William Collingwood born Stanhope 1841. His parents were Joseph & Margaret (nee Wallis). In 1851 census he was a lead ore washer. Unfortunately for you he was married to Isabella Hanson in 1861. He had 7 children.

A quick look on the 1881 census on Ancestry has a William Collingwood born Shildon 1840 (just south of Bishops Auckland) married to a Charlotte from Guisborough - and living there. This may be the one for you.

Hope it helps.
James

Thank you very much James, my only problem is a daughter Clara Collingwood was my late Grandfathers Mother, the father came from Sheffield Joseph Stanley. Now how did they meet?.  They went to Cambridge where they had 3 off 4 children. On the 1891 census he is from Sheffield and she from Wakefield.  I cannot find a Collingwood from Wakefield.   What makes it even more confusing is on my Grandfathers birth cert it gives the Father as John Stanley [the family new him as John] and the Mother as Clara Thompson !! On the other 2 Children the father registered them as Joseph Stanley and Clara Collingwood.  She registered my Grandfather. the registrar confirmed they are all from the same family!!.
They don't  want to make it to easy!!
By the way William Collingwood was an Train driver.
