I am seeking the Birth details of my GGrandmother -
Elizabeth [Eliza] Maria COTTRELL b about 1837.

Eliza came to Australia with her parents as a 1 year old -
"arrived in Sydney on the vessel "CALCUTTA" 15 Oct 1838.
The ship had sailed from Cove of Cork on 29 June 1838 ...."

Parents names:
Richard COTTRELL b c1814
Elizabeth BUTLER  b c1818

To search for records before the start of Civil registration you will need to check for parish records. To do this you first need to know the family religion and their location in some detail - i.e. town, townland or parish.  This is vital, as not all parishes have have early records.

I only have a family anecdote which mentions Clonmel: 
Also the family was Roman Catholic.

The family left from Cork when emigrating to Australia in 1838.

"Description in NSW Shipping records -
Richard Cottrell married male immigrant. 
To the Government.  Native of Cork.

Son of William Cottrell, an Attorney in Cork and Anne Williamson, his wife.
Cabinet and Chair-maker.  24 years of age  -  1 June 1838. 
Catholic. Read and write."

just wondering what the possible Tipperary connection is .. both of the Cottrell references mention Cork ?

RC Parish records for part of County Cork (south west county & city) are available on www.irishgenealogy.ie, and there are Cottrell records listed... I dont see any good matches for Eliza.... Richard's baptism might be a little before some of the parish records start.

It appears that my own grt grandmother Elizabeth Cottrell 1836-1907 may well have been your grt grandmother's second cousin.

Elizabeth's father was Charles Cottrell (architect) whose business address was Wandsworth Bridge, Cork City.  In turn, Charles father was Francis Edward Cottrell, also an architect of the same address.

The reason that I feel that Francis the Architect and William the Attorney may have been brothers is in the registry of Deeds there is a lease dated 29th October 1804 concerning both Francis and William.  I will have to get a copy to get the full details.

Even though I live near Cork, I have found it very difficult to find any information on this family and felt that they had all emigrated.  There is another family of Cottrell's based around Baltimore in west Cork who are not related.
