Bermuda baptisms? Please help
« on: Saturday 23 October 10 11:49 BST (UK) »
I've just learned that my ggggrandfather, Lieut. John Cameron, was serving with his battalion in Bermuda at the time my gggrandfather Donald Charles Cameron was born, around 1813-1814.  (This may explain why I haven't been able to find a birth/baptism in Britain!)

This was before civil registration, and I'd welcome any advice about how I could search for a record of the baptism.  Even advice about churches on Bermuda would be helpful.  I believe the family was C of E/Episcopalian.

All suggestions gratefully received!

The birth record you are looking for would have probably been listed at the church level. As he was active military serving in Bermuda, it would in all likelyhood have been at the Dockyard in Somerset (sometimes called Sandy's) Parish. There is a book: "Early Bermuda Records 1619-1826" by Hallet that would probably be the best option. However, it is out of print and very hard to find. Some research libraries do have it so you may get lucky there. The Maritime Museum in the Dockyard in Bermuda now owns the rights and there is talk about doing a website for Bermuda genealogy so you may want to check with them periodicly. I wish you luck. I am trying to get a hold of the book myself and will look for you if I get a chance. Sorry I could not be more help.

Thank you very much, fairyoevil, for your response!

I will look at checking with the Dockyard in Bermuda if I can find it online, but don't like my chances of  finding the book here in Oz.  If you do find it and can check for me, I would be enormously grateful!  This birth/baptism has eluded a number of family researchers, and it would be such a blast to actually find it!

Regards

QFHS has 4 Hallett books on Bermuda.  EDIT - 3 books & a CD   ;D  ;D
go to www.qfhs.org.au->Services ->Library Reference Collection catalogue search.
Put Bermuda in the first slot & Hallett in the author slot.

I expect to be going there on Saturday 19 Jan. for a couple of meetings and will have a look for you if I can.  Can you give me any other pertinent information (like mother's name)

If you can email it (see my profile), even better.
Cheers
Dawn M

PS  I see it's not on my profile any more in the new regime!         I'll send it to you. by PM

Well, Marie, I finally got to QFHS today.  I checked:
> CD "19th century church registers of Bermuda." 2nd ed.
> book "Early Bermuda records 1619-1826: a guide to the parish and clergy registers with some assessment lists and petitions" compiled by A C Hollis Hallett
> book "Bermuda index 1784-1914: an index of births, marriages and deaths, as recorded in Bermuda newspapers" compiled by C F E Hollis Hallett

No joy on Donald Charles Cameron.  In fact there were very few with surname Cameron, right across the three publications.  Lots of people seemed to have Cameron as a second or third forename!  Also checked for Isabella Kennedy as some births had mother's maiden names, but no joy.
Found a couple of John Cameron references but they were in late 1700s and late 1800s.

Sorry about that

Thank you so much for looking, Dawn. :)  The mystery continues! :'(  I'd emailed the Maritime Museum as suggested by fairyoevil, but they haven't answered me.  Perhaps he was beamed down!  ::) 8)
