John Leggett
« on: Friday 22 October 10 16:53 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I am trying to find the birth, marriage and hence wife of John Leggett. All I know about him is that his daughter Jane was married on 16 July 1875 at Castleknock. The witnesses to the marriage are given as Thomas Leggett and Annie Humpherson. Jane was working at Knockmaroon Lodge and her fathers occupation is given as Land Steward.

Details of Janes marriage have recently become available via the new trial FamilySearch website so perhaps her fathers details will be added at some time?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Full civil registration started in 1864, so you will need to research parish records for earlier details (e.g. Jane's baptism, John's marriage etc )

p.s. do you know what religion the Leggett family were  ?

non-Catholic marriages were registered from 1845, so if that applies it might be worth checking for marriages for John c1855..

marriage of a possible sibling to Jane ....

see : Marriage of Robert Leggett and Margret Forston - 2 Dec 1880

The parish is St. Auden's Church of Ireland, Dublin City and the grooms father name is John Leggett, occupation Steward (RC records dont usually include occupations). Both the bride and groom give Dublin city addresses.

see the Dublin City parish records at : www.irishgenealogy.ie

Thanks very much for your help. Jane was married in Castleknock according to the Rites and ceremonies of the Church of Ireland so I guess Robert could well be a sibling of Janes. I wonder where Thomas Leggett fits in? The copy I obtained of Janes marriage certificate is superbly hand written!

Castleknock Church of Ireland parish has quite old records back to the early 1700s, but I dont think they are available online anywhere at the moment. Keep an eye on the IrishGenealogy website I mentioned... in case they add them at some stage.

Land stewards can be difficult to trace as they could move around for work. One of my gtgtgt-grandfathers was a Land steward and some of his children were born in Co. Offaly and others in Co. Dublin.

Do you have any later details for Jane which might show a place of birth for her (e.g. census return) ?

Hello Shane, the Census records only state she was born in Ireland in 1856. As far as I know her first child Thomas Edwin Cock was born in Ireland in 1876, Mary Jane in 1878 possibly in Ireland and the others in Southampton, Hants.

possible children to Jane and Charles :

 Mary Jane Cock, 30 May 1878, Chapelizod, Dublin, Ref: 2-2 p 521
 Thomas Edwin Cock, 03 Sep 1876, Dublin, Ref v 17-2 p 570

parents : Charles Cock / Jane Legget

These are both from the extracted records on familysearch - see the introduction topic. The references can be used to locate the full index details required to order certs - the civil index page number is part of the reference.

That agrees with the dates I have for their first two children, I wasn't sure if Mary was born in Ireland. I assume I have to find Janes birth certificate as the easiest way of finding her mothers names.
