William Hayward of Islington
« on: Wednesday 20 October 10 13:44 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to locate William Haywood born approx 1835 Islington, Middlesex, London. His middle name might begin with a 'P' or 'B' or 'R'. He married an Elizabeth ? from Hoxton, Hackney prior to the 1881 census, but I cannot find this marriage.
He has been located in the 1881 and 1891 census in the Upper Holloway, Islington (Kingsdown Road & Holloway Road) area with his wife and child Arthur William. He was a bricklayer by trade.
I'm trying to find him in any of these census's 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1901?  where is this man  ???
I'm trying to find his marriage so that I can identify him and then try to find his birth? For someone who was allegedly born, lived, married and died in the same area, I am having quite a problem?
I'm hitting a bit of a stone wall and wondering if anyone can get me going again. All help will be much appreciated.  :)

Hi

Was he HAYWARD (per your title) or HAYWOOD (per your post)? Have you searched for him under both versions?

I see that William was said to be deceased at the time of Arthur William's marriage to Gertrude SPRATT on 8 October 1906.

2 possible marriages:

March Qtr 1881, Islington Volume 1b Page 438
William Haywood to (possibly) Elizabeth Bailey

September Qtr 1859, Islington Volume 1b Page 263
William Stephens Haywood to (possibly?) Elizabeth Deanear Trott

Kevin

N.B. Possibly because FreeBMD lists 2 or 3 couples per page, with no telling which lady married which gent!

This one can be eliminated because parish records for St John, Upper Holloway show that on 10 Sep 1859 Elizabeth Deanar TROTT married George Henry PLATTON, and four days later William Stephens HAYWOOD married Margaret Ellen ALLNUTT.

These two did indeed marry one another (by process of elimination, because the other couple on the page, Fred VIERSEN and Sarah Ellen E FORGE, appear together in later records).

I have managed to contact someone who has a copy of this marriage cert and learned that this marriage is for a much younger couple - William Haywood born 1857 - as the one I'm searching for was born 1835 approx.

Finding him in eg: 1871 census would be great, but so far no joy.

Looking at 1871 census, for William (& variants) Haywood (& variants) living in London, and born in London I can only find:

William Haywod, age 35 at St James, Westminster
Sarah Haywod, wife, age 33
together with 2 sons and 2 daughters.
(RG10/142/28/57)

Repeating the process with Hayward (& variants) comes up with:

William Hayward, age 36 in Hackney, a Clerk, b St Edmunds
Jane Wallice, wife, age 26
(RG10/324/18/33)

William Hayward, age 34, Visitor in Mile End Old Town, a Newsagent, b Spitfields
(RG10/564/45/35)
