Growcock and Jellis puzzle
« on: Tuesday 19 October 10 19:30 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

Yes, it's me again with another puzzle.  Please be assured though that I try and exhaust all other options before taking up your good time.  Here's the problem:-

Two ancestors who claim to be from a part of Lincolnshire which it turns out that seemingly, they aren't.

William Growcock b. about 1800 in Threekingham (in one census he says he was born in Stow).

William married Lavina Jellis in 1834 in Boston.  They can be found on all census forms living in Boston.

Lavina Jellis b. about 1811 and she says she's from Skirbeck, Lincolnshire.

I want to know who their parents where in order to travel further back.

I have trawled through the IGI Skirbeck birth/baptism entries and found nothing of note.  I tried as many spelling variants as I can think of - Gellis, Jelous, etc. - similarly with Grocock, Growcock etc.

Also, Lavina Growcock is missing from the 1891 census.  She died in 1898.  William died in 1882.

Thanks for any help or advice.

David

Quote
William Growcock b. about 1800
Lavina Jellis b. about 1811

If they married in 1843 - a copy of their marriage cert will give their respective fathers names

They were both "getting on a bit" when they married (43 and 32) so the cert wll tell you whether either was married previously

If Lavina was previously married - her fathers surname will be her birth surname

Oops!  Typo, Carole.  They were married in 1834.  I have corrected my post.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, Carole - that's the one.

I suspect that they both remembered the place where they grew up rather than the places they were born.  I can't think of any reason why they would fib about it, can you?  Trouble is, where does one go from there?

David

PS: Notice how the name is spelt differently.  There is much variance in the spelling of both names.

Blimey Geoff!  How on earth did you find that one? `Drawcock' - that's a spelling variant I never thought of.

Many many thanks once again! That's the Growcock one sorted I think.  Any ideas about the Jellis puzzle?

Keyboard86 - well done and thank you.  I spent an entire day searching for widow Grocock to no avail.  I doubt I would have found this.

You have given me one of her siblings too - which will narrow down the likely parents.

I consider myself quite adept in genealogy - until I come to this forum and consult the experts, and then I see how it's really done!

Many thanks and best wishes,

David
