Ann Carey 2nd Fleet convict
« on: Tuesday 19 October 10 03:17 BST (UK) »
Ann Carey born circa 1770/2 was convicted in Norwich Assizes, Norfolk of stealing on 3 Aug 1789, and was sentenced to 7 years. She arrived in Australia on 28 June 1790 and transferred to Norfolk Island in Aug 1790. Here she "married"? Stephen Gilbert and had 3 children.
In 1793 she returned to Port Jackson, and Stephen died in 1799. Ann then married Theophilus Feutrill/Fentrill/Futerile and had a further 10 children.
Where/how would I start to look online, (I,m in Oz) for details of Ann's birth/baptism etc, with the little info I have regarding her life before transportation?
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks,
Jellybeans

Hi Jellybeans :)

You could start with Ann's trial records, if they survive, to see if there is any identifying information in those.  The Norfolk Record Office has a guide for researching transportees:
http://www.archives.norfolk.gov.uk/documents/pdf/NRO014_Transportation_to_Australia.pdf

Assizes records are apparently held at the National Archives in London, but there may be some related records at the Norfolk Record Office by the looks...perhaps contact them to find out.

Cheers
Prue

Hi Prue,
Thanks for the link, I have printed off the information leaflet to study.
Will have to dig deeper to find records, other than the "name, ship, where convicted, sentence" record that I found.
Regards,
Jellybeans

You might be lucky, Jellybeans, I hope so.  I have been able to get trial transcripts and other stuff related to my Nottingham convict, but unfortunately for my Warwick one there were no records available as they'd been destroyed  :-\  So it's hit and miss - I hope it's a hit for you!

Hi Jellybeans,

I'm also researching the family of Ann Carey and Theophilus Feutrill.   I was wondering if you've had any luck tracking down Ann's trial record?
