BRIXTON HILL (HALL) STREATHAM

Hi

I believe I have found one of my elusive ancestors on the 1841 census living at the above address and is listed as a student.

My question is as his parents were of modest means is this a workhouse or a school?. Also is there a site where I can look up the history of the above address.

His name was Thomas Mclean b 1837 St Marylebone.

The Thomas McLean you are referring to was 9yrs old in 1841 - so could not be born 1837.  He is shown as "not born in county" which was Surrey

The full 1841 address was Cleveland House Brixton Hill and does appear to be a private school

thank you for that. Census are notorious for giving wrong ages and I am not convinced that I have the right person that is why I questioned whether it was a school or workhouse and I also stated his parents were of modest means.

According to the census, Cleveland House was a school.
Clue? Go back a page and you get
Edwin Day - SchoolMaster
Lydia Watson - Governess
Henry Bruin - Teacher

Would you assume that it was a boarding school, "census = night of"?

If you know his parents were "of modest means" then who were they?
How do you know he was born 1837?

I can verify that Cleveland House was a school run out of the private home of my 4x great grandfather, Edwin Horatio Day.
