Searching for Anderson family
« on: Monday 18 October 10 19:28 BST (UK) »
My Mum and I have long been searching for her birth mother. Unfortunately, we haven't got much, in part because I believe her birth was a secret at the time and also when we were last in Scotland, (in 1990) we were told there was a fire at the Registrar office and everything from 1947 was lost!

What we do know is that her mothers name is Jessie Anderson. In 1947 she was young (late teens early 20's perhaps?) and she had red curly hair (from what my adoptive Grandmother said from meeting her briefly at the adoption.) We have no actual DOB.

Mum was born at Perth Royal Infirmary. Her mother gave her address as Craigarnhall Farm, Bridge of Allan, presumably she was staying there during her pregnancy, possibly with friends or relatives. My research on the farm has not given me much to go on, the website is non existent other than a phone number for Keir & Cawder Estate.

She listed her occupation as Housekeeper, and gave the address 31 Norwood Drive Giffnock, Glasgow, which we were told does not exist, though appears to exist on Google maps.

Any help or pointing us in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Even in the event that she does not wish to be found, we would like to know if there are any other relatives out there, she would very much just like to know where she comes from.

Thanks
Megan.

Welcome to Rootschat - I've moved your post to Scotland-General board since it covers a wide area in Scotland.
Rootschat has a 'no living people' policy for postings so if anyone can provide you with more information that might concern living people they should do so by PM (personal message)- each party usually needs 3 posts to do so.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I've made a lot of headway on this, though still haven't located Jessie.

I've a friend in Glasgow helping me with the legwork, and going through years of information on the house (which he visited and made phone calls and collected voter rolls) we've learned that the house on Norwood belonged to Astrid Marie Stirling-Brown in the 1940's (and possibly earlier, we couldn't go farther back) and they lived there until 1967. So now I'm having a difficult time locating information on Astrid, other than she was the head of the WVS in Renfrewshire and received a medal from the Queen for her political and public service in 1954. I had hoped there would be more written about her, but coming up empty.

There are no records of her marriage or any children, but Robert Stirling-Brown also appears on the voters list, we've identified him as her husband. He is the son of Robert Brown and Elizabeth Emily Colville, Robert Sr is the son of John Brown and Mary Stirling.

We also know that the farm belonged then and still does to the Stirling family (Archie currently) though I've not been able to connect the Stirlings of the 2 houses to each other yet.

If anyone can shine a light on where we can find more information on Astrid (nee Sorensen) Stirling-Brown let me know! (Ancestry.com shows record of her dying in Greater London, 1980.)

Also, the voter's roll lists a Catherine C. Duncan as living at Norwood in the late 40's.

Hello
I came across this query by accident on the internet. Astrid Marie Stirling Brown was my great grandmother. She had two daughters Irene and my Granny, Elizabeth (Betty). I don't know an awful lot about Aunt Irene but Granny grew up in Glasgow and moved to London with her husband Robert Laidlaw and had four children, Douglas Robert Sterling (1937-1958??), * (my mum) who was born in *, * and *.
My mum moved to Australia as an adult and married * my father in Melbourne in 1965, they are both still alive and living in Melbourne and I am the only child *, I was born in * and  live in Tasmania, Australia.
* married twice and has two sons *.
Mum's younger sister * never married and has no children. She is interested in genealogy and would be able to give you a great deal of information if you contact her - she has written articles and things. Her address is *
Cheers

Sorry I just saw the above message about no information on living people, I referred to living people in my first message so it may be deleted. I have information on Astrid Stirling Brown and her descendants, not quite sure how to send a message or pass it on, please free free to email me on (*) if you would like to follow up.

Apologies to the moderator - my error.

Cheers

I am researching Robert Stirling Brown and Elizabeth Emily Colville - they are the great grandparents of a lady I'm doing the research for.  Have quite a lot on the Browns although struggling a bit with the parents John Brown and Mary Stirling - both born in County Antrim (no link to a farm in Stirling that I have found).  Cannot find John's death (after 1881) and thought I had Mary's - however, this was a poorhouse death and I think given son Robert's successful business it would be unlikely she died a pauper.  Couldn't find a marriage in Scotland for Robert jr and Astrid either so must have married elsewhere   ???
