hi, hoping someone can help me find my gt X2 grandfathers birth & his parents, have finally got his marriage certificate & was hoping to find him in the cencus but its still not helping, am i missing something ?

my grandfather was Charles Simpson married Mary Florence Neale 3 june 1895 at Masbrough, aged 23, a bachelor, cabinet maker of 17 Todd Street, Bolton, father John Simpson (deceased) a carpenter. witnesses were his wifes brothers & sister.

1901 cencus living at 46 Cannon st, Bolton, aged 29, artist embellisher, born Hull. (living with wife, family & lodger)

1911 cencus he is listed as Charles Simpson Oldgate, although his wife & daughters have Simpson as their surname, living at 26 Conway View, Leeds, aged 39, furniture embellisher artist, born Bolton. (living with wife & family)

dont know where Oldgate has come from

cannot locate him in either the 1891 or 1891 cencus, or find a birth or baptism for him

So we don't know whether he was born in Bolton or in Hull which makes it difficult to determine the right census entry

The 1911 is completed by the householder themselves so if Charles filled in his own birthplace - it suggests Bolton.  If somebody else filled it in - they may have assumed his birthplace was Bolton if they knew that's where he was living previously

One good thing - his birthyear is consistent at 1872
