I'm thinking of going to Dublin General Records Office to look through their material. Can anyone make any suggestions about how easy / difficult it is to access their information.

The main source in the GRO research room are the Index books, the actual registers are not available to the public. The Index books contain the same details as the index available online on familysearch - see BMD Index   i.e. name, year/quarter, registration district, volume number & page number. When searching you can request 5 years of index books at a time (for either births, marriages or deaths) - there is a charge for this, I think €2.

Once you find possible record for the event you are looking for you can then fill out an order form with the references and await a research cert (€4). There is a maximum of 5 per person/per day.

The room can be busy at times, so it's a good idea to arrive as they open at 9:30. Certs usually take about 10 or 15 minutes to arrive... although these can take longer when they are busy.

Hey mcneill,

its worth mentioning that you can save yourself a few quid on SOME certs by going to the LDS family centre in Glasnevin.  Opening hours are available on the family search website

You can view the following there on microfilm (for free!)
Births 1864-Jun qtr. 1881
Marriages 1864-1870
Deaths 1864-1870

I know its not much, but it is useful.  There's plenty of parking at the centre too - (also free - unlike at GRO).
The only down side is they don't have a print-out facility, so you have to transcribe the data from the microfilm.

Finally, just an addendum to Shane's info on the GRO - You CAN order more than 5 certs in the day, but any after the 5th are posted to you.

No problem McNeill. 

The LDS is particularly useful if you want to do a more widespread search on an unusual family name.  Using the indexes and microfilm you can get a cross-section of an entire surname/family over the entire island for that finite period.

Might take a while for a surname like McNeill, but it took no time at all for 'Hussey'!
