SFHG Marriage record CD query.
« on: Sunday 17 October 10 17:31 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Today I went to a family history fair and bought the Sussex Family History Group marriage index cd.  Please does anyone have any knowledge of this cd as I need some help.

I gave it a "test drive" by looking up something I already knew:-

James Robins married Sussanah Cornford at Heathfield on 7 Nov 1780.

When I looked it up there is a mysterious mention of Tenterden under the groom.

If anyone can look this up and explain it to me I would be grateful.

Also how do you look at the marriage licences in the other areas. ie Canterbury?

Many thanks  :)
Best wishes HL

It means that he was of the parish of Tenterden - at the time of the marriage at least.  it also shows that she is daughter of John.  they add in whaever liitle snippets they can.  Often you get the witnesses as well.  Always worth looking at the entry via both names too as they can vary.
I don't think Canterbury licences will be on - only Chichester.  Don't think I have ever seen one but am prepared to be corrected.

Hi Andrea,

Thank you for replying and explaining it to me.

I thought that James Robins was christened in Warbleton on 29 April 1750 and from that I have acquired his parents names and therefore gone back another generation.

When I saw the refence to Tenterden I became doubtful of that info but cannot find a James Robins born in Tenterden so wondered what it meant.

Best wishes  :)
Best wishes HL

Click on Reference at the top and then on the 'Marriage Licences' tab.  There are several hundred Canterbury licences.

Thanks a lot for that info - I thought it was on there somewhere but couldn't seem to get to grips with it. :)

The licences will be a subset involving a Sussex party.

In passing, in the 2005 and 2008 editions (but not 2004) there is also a folder called SMIExtra where an attempt has been made to extract surnames from the witnesses etc..  Click on index.html.

If you have the original edition (or don't have the CD) http://www.sfhg.org.uk/smiextra may be of interest.

Thanks for all the help.

My CD is 2008 edition and perhaps I'm in "thick" mode today but I can't find what you are pointing out.

Thanks anyway :)
Best wishes HL

You need to look at the folder on the CD.

Click on My computer / right click on the CD drive and select Explore / double click on the SMIExtra folder
