James Williamson b. 1815/16 - Birchwood
« on: Sunday 17 October 10 16:22 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I wonder if someone can help me solve a mystery re the birth of my above ancestor.
In the 1851 census his place of birth is shown as Leics.,in 1861 Eastwood & 1871Birchwood Notts, 1881 Birchwood Derbys.
I have managed to ascertain that the Eastwood record is incorrect & feel the same may apply to Birchwood.
I assume that Birchwood is the area near Somercotes on the Notts/Derbys border but cannot trace any birth records for there. Does anyone know where such a birth would have been registered or have access to the records to confirm the validity of this or not?

Thanks
Carol

Hi Carol,

According to Genuki Somercotes or Summercotes is a hamlet in the parish of Alfreton. Have you searched that area?
