Mystery Death
« on: Sunday 17 October 10 15:24 BST (UK) »
My great uncle Edward Hewins died on the 16th September 1932 aged 42 in Portage la Prairie and that's it, no obituary, service or cause of death. I believe he was an ex Mountie. Does anyone know anything relating to this?

My suggestion w/b to send for the death certificate if you haven't already done so? No guarantee about what info might be on it but you just never know.

Please refrain from starting new threads about the same person. It would be a waste of valuable time for someone to duplicate the research that has already been done on your behalf.

I apologise if I have broken any forum rules over this, but I don't seem to be able to trace this record. You should also remember that many people using this site, including myself are total beginners in this field.Once again sorry if I have wasted anyones time.

Cumbria, you have most certainly not wasted anyone's time. It just helps us to help others better if we know what info you already have so we are not looking for the same info again. Thus it is better to keep all your queries about Edward on the same thread where the info you now have is. Hope this makes sense?

My sincere apologies for having not worded my other post as well as I could have :-[. I hope the above wording is a little less abrupt. We were all beginners once ourselves and sometimes forget what it was like to be one.

That said ......

If you find Edwards death in the Manitoba Index (see link) then click on 'Detail View' to the right of his name you will see all the info that can potentially be found on a death certificate. This includes burial info. There is no guarantee, of course, that the info will be there but at this point it looks like this is your best bet. And the cost is quite reasonable at $12.00 Canadian.

Apologies not needed but thank you anyway. I found his death on the index but apart from the date and place (Plap) gives no details. I have just found out he was beaten up over something to do with his police service and died from the injuries. Will try to obtain his death certificate.

Hello cumbria,

Edward Hewins  and his wife Mary Annie both buried Hillside Cemetery,Portage La Prairie,Man. Their records state his age as 53  often records were not alway accurate depending on the informant.

I have contacted the library there and they are going to check their newspaper records. As soon as I hear back I will contact you.

Thanks for that, I have now found the plot numbers and burial area. All I need now is the reason he died or what of. I have been led to believe he was beaten up and died from his injuries but cannot confitrm it.

Hi Cumbria

Did you ever determine if Edward Hewins was a member of the Mounted Police as you indicated in previous posts?  I found this link with information of how to get more information.
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/hist/archiv-eng.htm

I would think that if he were in the police force and was killed in the line of duty that it would be reported in the local and probably major provincial newspapers.

Did you try contacting the Hewins in Brandon, MB?  I think this is possibly a son and could most likely tell you of the circumstances of Edward's death.

Susan

Hi Susan, Yes there are two of his children still alive one son and one daughter both of which I have had contact with, and that is where the beaten up theory came from. It's possible he was in the local police and not the mounties but he was also a lay preacher at some time. It's beginning to look as though I am not meant to know the answer to this. Thanks for your help.
