Jaby Taylor Boer War
« on: Sunday 17 October 10 09:49 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Can anyone help me with Jaby Taylors South African records
I have his WW1 records that tell me he was in the
6th Middlesex Btn before the War, Born 1878 Kensington
his No was 1196 which is crossed out and a new number put above
I assumed this was his original No and put it in on the Anglo Boer War site
but came up with the name T Allen
any help please
Thanks  John

Hi John

The 6th Battalion of the Middlesex were Militia. You need to try the records on Findmypast for men discharged 1900 to 1913. If they are not there you should look at the Militia Attestation Papers. They are in Kew, or you can wait until the end of 2011 for them to go on Findmypast. There may be a set in both series. It depends if the Middlesex Militia went to South Africa as a unit, or men transferred to another unit for the war.

Unless 1196 was next to the 6th Bn information that was not his number in the Boer War. All regiments are different but I would expect his Militia number to be closer to 6/7000. It could be his first number in WW1 that was later changed for some reason.

John,

G/1196 was his number on re-enlistment in 1914. As far as I understand it, he was a Special Reservist of sorts, hence the fast track to the front with 1st Battalion in December.

The second number is from his transfer to 24th Training Reserve Battalion.

Is his proper name Jaby or Jabez, as his medal index card clearly reads Jabez?

Thanks Phil

He was known as both, his son was Jabez but I have no Birth cert for him, he came from a travelling family, his father was Sam Smith, but we know he went under his mothers name, one of the family says he served in India as well, but thats only hear say.

Thanks again

John
