Cemetery Photo Request - Thomas WAKELIN - Sculcoates
« on: Sunday 17 October 10 08:01 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I wonder if anyone might be able to assist with a photo of a headstone/gave at All Saints Church, Sculcoates please?

I don't know the plot number sorry but Thomas WAKELIN was buried at All Saints, on 22 Nov 1855.

He was a stone mason so I'm hoping there is a headstone with his and other family details noted.

Cheers
Lynda

Hi

I have a feeling that the site now only has a few graves left. The East Riding Family History Society does hold the MI inscriptions for Hull, you could try contacting them to see if there is any record of a headstone

This other web site be also be of interest

Good luck

Marge :)

I'm not sure where All Saints church is/was. There are a few references on google. But sculcoates graveyards on sculcoates lane (if this is the one) is split over 2 plots. 1 is badly overgrown and the other is in a state. Some of the stones still stand but any broken ones were smashed up to make a path.

It's disgusting the council did that, and it's meant a lot of headstones were lost.

I'll be heading up there in the spring when it's less marshy, and photographing all of the remaining headstones, so I'll let you know if I find this one at all.

There is also a possibility of someone in that parish being buried at the bankside "air street burial ground" which is largely still intact, although that closed for burials in 1855.

If there are any other pictures you need from the Hull area please feel free to message me direct. x

that's appalling!!  I was always under the impression that burials grounds were protected but if the council thinks it's ok to damage them.. goodness!! ...

thanks so much for your suggestion Tracey and offer to take a look when you're up there in the Spring -- much appreciated indeed!

The IGI entry doesn't say much other than he was buried 'All Saints Church, Sculcoates' on 22 Nov 1855 so hope that's enough to go on.

If there's anything 'down under' here in Christchurch NZ you ever need, do let me know....

I will PM you once I've worked out what else I'd like a photo of so again -- many thanks for your very kind offer....

Season's greetings!

cheers
