help needed to decide
« on: Saturday 16 October 10 21:44 BST (UK) »
needing help to decide which way to go
my 4th gt grandfather James Brewitt married Mary Oliver 17 nov 1818 at Gringley on the hill, they had 5 known children - Charles (my 3rd gt grandfather), Hannah, James, Sarah & Mary.
in 1841 he was 46 living in gringley on hill with his wife & family
1851 he was 57 again living in gringley with his wife & family
1861 he was 67 livingin gringley with his wife
1871 he was 78 living in gringley with his wife
1881 he was in gringley with his wife & living with his married daughter and her family
all the cencuses leads to him being born between 1793 & 1795
where i need help is in deciding about his birth & parents
i hav found a baptism on the IGI for a james Brewitt 9 december 1793 at gringley on the hill, parents James Brewitt & Sarah Briggs but on ancestry i have found several trees that match until this point they all have the parents as Thomas Brewitt & Sarah Bellamy but no details on how they have decided on this
im hoping someone will be able to have a look at the gringley parish registers and see if they can find out anything that will help me
sorry that this is so long

Hi

If you look on Family search for Thomas Brewitt he appears to have married Sarah Bellamy on 12th Jan 1801 in Basford Notts, so possibly a different couple.

As to the trees of Ancestry could easily be a case of one having them as the parents and the others just copying with checking.

Hi Little h

Thomas Brewitt & Sarah (Bellamy) had 4 children baptised Basford/ St Mary's  so you can eliminate that couple.

There is a death on Freereg Sept Q 1888 for a James Brewitt aged 95 which would put his birth 1793. It comes under East Retford reg district which covers Gringley on the Hill.  (ref 7b 1)

I have found a lot of mistakes on Ancestry trees.  The mistakes just get copied around by people who don't do any research.

To me there are 2 pieces of information missing from what's appeared so far.

First, I  presume all census years say he was born Gringley. 1881 does, I don't have ready access to the others.

Second is the logical problem. You have found solution A that seems to fit. There might still be a solution B that would also fit but has not yet been found. It is very likely that you now have the right James Brewitt, but the logic does require a check he was the only possible James Brewitt in Gringley. IGI doesn't seem to have any possible alternatives.

Sorry to be pedantic on this second point, but this is the source of many people jumping to erroneous conclusions - they take the first thing they find that might be correct as definitely being correct.

Hello again

I don't know if you already have this information but James & Mary Oliver married by licence.

James Brewitt, cordwainer of Gringley on the Hill, bac, over 21
Mary Oliver, spinster of Gringley on the Hill over 21

Bond was dated 16.11. 1818 and the bondsman was Thomas Cliffe, joiner of Tuxford.

thanx for all your help, as james stated he was born in gringley on every cencus, i have concluded that this is correct, and in the absence of any other James being baptised in gringley during that time, i am certain that i have the right one and have the right parents. i have also found that Sarah Brewitt who i believe to be his mother was buried on the same day as he was baptised. thanx for the info about the marriage and the bond i didnt have that info.
thanx again little h
