Help to locate Grandad
« on: Saturday 16 October 10 20:56 BST (UK) »
Hi
As a child I never new my grandfather served in ww2, he never spoke about it at all, as a lot of people did not.
I am trying to locate who he served with and maybe get his service records.
His name was leonard William Timmis born 29th october 1915.

Talking to my mother who says she new very little about his time served, says he came out in 1946 and always was lead to believe he was in from the start of the war.

The only thing she says he mentioned was he was in Italy and used to talk about Salerno and some thing about a beach.
At the time  1939/40 he lived on the shropshire/cheshire border.

The only other thing was he stayed a time in Darby in what was mum thought was a B&B, mum thought he was on some training.
Is there any records avalible to help me get his service number or anything to give me any ideas as i am stuck  :(

Thanks
Sue

Hi
Thanks for that i have just downloaded the forms, i did think i would need his service number but it says sevice number or date of birth.
I dont like the words long wait  :'(

If its the only option i will have to do it, I had hoped I may have been able to find out a little about him before sending for his records though.  :(

Thankyou for your response

Hi
Its so frustrating there was always a picture of grandad in uniform and a card in his wallet so my mum says.
After my nan pasted away and her things were sorted out no picture was found.   :(

I have since found out, he said he was in the Engineers and he worked on the bridges in Italy.
It does not help me as i dont know if he would have gone straight into the engineers or would he have been with a regiment before ie possible Shropshire or cheshire's.
I would of said there would of been medels, but what happened to them i just dont know.
Its because there is such a lot i dont know, that i want to find out  :(

Thanks
Sue

Hello Suee, Have you tried the Royal Engineers Association They have a web site. or the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Associations web site. They could both have helped in the building of Bridges.   WF

Hi
Thanks Blacknight  :D you do it better than me, i hope you get a responce.
I did wonder if mum would have to pay for his records, it would be good if she didn't have to, its the cost that is stopping me filling the forms out.
