Reverend John William Conway Hughes
« on: Saturday 16 October 10 11:08 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about this gentleman who was at one time residing in Keswick, Cumberland.
All I know of him was that he was once the chaplain to the Duke Of Manchester and may have served as a army chaplain on Cofu, Greece. He may also have been a vicar in Nydd, Leeds but I am unsure whether this is 'my' John Conway Hughes or another of same name.
I really would like to find out when he was born, who he was married to, the names and birth dates of his children and when he died.
I know this is asking a lot but if some kind soul could fill the gaps in my knowledge I would be grateful.

Hi gortonboy
Yes I do believe this is him.
The reason I am trying to track him and his family is because one of his children was my great grandmother. I do believe that there were several other daughters and a son.
Thank you very much.

He appears in Crockfords Clerical Directory for 1865 but at that stage there is no mention of Corfu or Keswick so you need to look at a later one.  It does mention various books he wrote but his last place is as curate in Eaton Socon in 1864.  Previously in Kimbolton in 1861, Kensington 1854 and Ashurst in 1850.

Her name was Gertrude Alicia Gwendolen Hughes. She was born abt 1853. I believe she married George Douglas Hamilton in 10 March 1873 in Edinburgh. George was a pioneer settler/ landowner of a huge-13,000 acres-block of land in New Zealand and they returned there in March 1874.
