James CLARK & Annie LANYON

Hi there,

Hoping someone has this family in their tree or can help me out with more information.

I have James Clark born 1831 in Ballantrae, Ayrshire (parents William Clark & Susannah McChesney).  He married Annie Lanyon in 1875 and died in 1909.  There appear to be 5 children Annabella (b1859), James (b1863), George McChesney (b1865), Susannah McChesney (b1869) and David Quinten (b1871).  The first 2 children were born in Amherst and the others are listed as Talbot/Majorca/Craigie.

In his will he mentions having 3 children (the last 3), but all children have James Clark/Annie Lanyon (or variants) listed as their parents.  And they seem to have married after all the children were born?

Annie Lanyon/Clark died in 1926 and her parents are listed as John Lanyon & Honor.  I'm having trouble tracking down any records for her.  I think she was born in Cornwall, but I can't tally this up with the names of her parents, or any immigration records.

If anyone has any information on when Annie/James arrived in Australia, Annie's family in England, or anything else that would be great.

Hi,

Annies parents details on her death certificate may not be accurate, a more reliable source would be her marriage certificate. Particularly if James died before her and the informant was one of her children.

Annie's death reg gives a birth year of around 1841 - does her death cert say she was born in Cornwall?  As mum mum said, you really need to get the marriage cert for correct parents' names.  Did James have a particular occupation?

James Clark arrived Melbourne from Greenock, Scotland in March 1854 as a 24 year old Scottish Blacksmith (I believe his father and brother were blacksmiths in Scotland) on the Forest Monarch.

The marriage gives her place of birth as Cornwall, so it would appear the informant was right in that respect.

I just noticed that a John Lanyon married Honour White in Victoria in 1857 reg No 3870, possibly Annie's father's second marriage, hence her children thinking that her mother was Honour.
Lanyon seems to be definitely a Cornish name.

Perhaps they weren't in Cornwall at the time of the census, could have all been born in cornwall but in another county.

Hello everyone,

This is all great.  James Clark was a blacksmith (from probate/electoral register) and I can find him in Ballatrae in 1851 as a Blacksmiths apprentice.  I did see the record for the Forest Monarch and wondered if it was him - although the record I looked at doesn't show profession.

Good thinking on the second marriage.  Or maybe they married after the children were born too?

I'll have a look around the England/Wales census for 1851 and see if there is a John Lanyon that might fit.  Lanyon does seem to be a Cornish name - and Honor seems to be a family name too!!

I'm glad I seem to be heading in the right direction!!

Hi there,

Had a look at John Lanyon and Honor Maria White, and although the names and places all look good, the dates don't match.  Both John and Honor were born around 1839  . His probate record is on line and records the names of the children.

Too many people with the same name!!

The Cornish were like that, lots of people with the same names.  There are not a lot of Lanyon's in Victoria between 1836-88 though, John and Honour Lanyon at Sandhurst and Annie Lanyon/Clark is nearby at Majorca, Craigie,I still think there is possibly a connection. Could he even have been her brother?
There was a John Lanyon born in St Just 1839, of William and Eliabeth, fathers a miner, most of Cornwall were.

Still think that her marriage cert should show more, possibly even a town in Cornwall if you were lucky, maybe some witnesses.

Hi Debbie     My cousin and I solved this riddell last week.   Annie's parents were William Lanyon and Elizabeth Veale  . They Married abt 1838 and had 2 children  John and 1 other. Elizabeth died in 1842.  William remarried and in 1849 sailed to south Australia on the  "William Money" . The shipping list has them listed as William 35. Mary(woolcock) 32.  John 9 Honora 7 and William Henry Infant.  John Lanyon married Honor Maria White and this is all verified on their headstone , a notice in the local paper and from the White family history.  just by chance I found a death notice in the Argus newspaper on the 28 th july 1926 for Annie and Susannah Clark  attached to Honor Lanyon (Aka Annie) 1841-1926.  i then found the same notice listed with another source.         it seems that that Honor decided to be known as Annie. This would make sense  when you look back at the family tree  William's mother was Honor Davey(davy) and Annie would have been named after her . william had a sister named Honor as well and her sister in law was also  Honor.  Annie and James were married in 1875 as the marriage licence states.   James died in in 1909  and was a blacksmith in Majorcia and later Maryborough in Victoria. they are both buried there.  Annie and her daughter Susannah went down the street on a very cold wet winter's day and both caught pneumonia and Annie died on the 25th August 1926 and Susannah on the 26 August 1926.  Annie"s death certificate states 6 children , william being the oldest but we have no information about him. Annabella died early in 1926 aged 65 . James died at 2 (not confirmed yet) . George died in 1932 and David in 1942.  i think she never told anyone her birth name as the death certificate lists her parents as John and Honor Lanyon.  David gave the details and may have never known. she may have been disowned by the family for not not marrying until after the children were born and may have been closer to her brother.  hope you get this and it helps    jhldc
