Looking for Beveridge/Malcolm Families
« on: Saturday 16 October 10 00:57 BST (UK) »
Hello,
This is my first posting on Rootchat and it is with great interest reading other postings with a hope of finding something related to the above families, but alas it was not fruitful. Thus I'm in search of information that may lead me in the right direction.

My family emigrated to Australia in 1856 and settled in the Hunter Valley/ Newcastle areas of New South Wales. It is the history prior to this that I search for to continue the trace of the Families.

The biggest problem is that there are so many variants of the Beveridge Family that it hard to track the correct line. So the information I have could bear fruit from putting it out there.

I'm searching for information relating to Alexander Beveridge and Janet Malcom who were married at Dalgetty, Fife in 1832. I'm have trouble in finding prior to this time as after this one of their sons, Walter Beveridge emigrated to Australia.

I'll try and fill in some blanks with the information that I have that may be of help.
Walter Beveridge (born abt 1833 at Dalgetty), my GG Grandfather married a Marion Dowling (born in 1833) in 1851 at Crossgate, Fife. Walter's Mother and Father were Janet Malcolm (born 1814 at Aberdour, Fife) my GGG Grandmother and Alexander Beveridge (born abt 1808-10 at Dunfermline) my GGG Grandfather. Alexander, according to some of the records (Walter's Death Certificate) he was a Coal Mine Manager but I cannot confirm this, but I know that he was associated with the Donibristle Colliery according to the 1841 Scotland Census. This is all I have and I continue to search and search.

Is there anyone that can help me in my search for my Scottish Roots?

So in a nut shell I'm looking for information relating to Alexander Beveridge, Janet Malcolm and while I'm at it Marion Dowling.
Much appreicated and look forward to any information that comes my way.

hi  i saw your post about beveridgesthere are over 300 in my file to alexanders that i dont have marriages for one born in 1808 and one born in 1810 do you know how alexander and janet named their children.  What was the name of their first born son and second born daughter. Even though some people dont have a lot of faith in naming patterns its a place to start eliminating people.       Beans

G'Day,
That was quick with a reply, didn't think I would be replying so soon after posting something.
To answer your questions, this is the point were I run into trouble and conflicting information regarding children and the number within the family. As far as the birth of Alexander, it was about 08-10, it could have been earlier or later but just outside these years. One bit of information has him in 1807 and another has him 1811. But some records from Scotlands People ties Alexander done to the earlier more than the latter. Also, going by another record I can narrow done some information as to the Children of Alexander and Janet.
According to the 1841 Scottish Census their children were Walter (1st born Son) and Ina (2nd born dau) but when you look at the 1851 Census it is different with more children and a different list of Children. Still Walter is the 1st born son but from this census there is NO 2nd born daughter. There appears only one Daught named and that even differs from 1841.
For example 1841 lists Children as Walter, Lillie, Ina and Thomas. Were as 1851 list as Walter, John, Thomas, Margaret, Alexander, George and David. Now, I have a record that states their son Alexander was born or baptised 17/04/1846 with Parents named as Alexander and Janet. also on Walter's Death Certificate (Australia) parents named as Alexander and Janet and Alexander's occupation was Mine Manager.
So to answer your questions was a little long winded but had to be put in writing so even I could follow what I'm answering.

Regards

It would appear that Janet Beveridge (nee Malcolm) died between 1851 and 1861.   There is nothing on Scotlands People in civil registration which began in 1855 so looks like she died between 1851 and 1854.

Alexander, however, lived until 1887.   He died at Aberdour 2/8/1887, informant son George, and Alexander's parents are given as Walter Beveridge and Margaret Grieve.   Unable to trace a marriage between them.

There are one or two online trees for Alexander and his birth date is given as 19/12/1808 Crossgates, Dunfermline, bp.1/1/1809 Dunfermline - siblings shown have brief details but given as:

Isabella bc.1807
Janet b.6/2/1811 Crossgates, bp.17/3/1811 Dunfermline
David bc.1811
John bp.16/7/1812 Dalgetty
William bp.19/8/1817 Dunfermline
Jane bc.1821

None of the trees show a marriage date for Walter and Margaret I'm afraid.

Hi Annette,
Thank you greatly for the latest pieces of information. It certainly starts to fill in some blanks.
There was a time that I was looking at the Walter Beveridge and Margaret Grieve line but I thought I was heading in he wrong direction. I have actually found something outlining the above from a website called Tribalpages.com and this gave a lead to start from and then I veered away. But with your information it basically brings me back to look at all the printouts etc that I have.

I even got to the stage that I thought I had found a poosible marriage date for Walter and Margaret, that being 21/9/1803. I cannot confirm this at present but now I can chase.

I also have the Birth Locations of all but Jane (bc 1821) and Isabella's death. 12/9/1886 Crossgates, Dalgety.

Again thank you for the information you have supplied, please feel free if you wish to add more.

Thanks Diddy,
I've been to the website you mention and it is quiet informative on the history of the Donibristle mines, now to see how informative it is and see if I can link Margaret Grieve to the family.

Again, thanks for the reply to my queries.
