West Felton lookup please
« on: Friday 15 October 10 18:54 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the death and burials of Thomas Jones Born about 1838 and of his wife Ellen, born Ellen Griffiths at Hordley in1837. They were still alive and living in 1911 at Weirbrook, West Felton. I would also like to know what happened to their children, viz; Sarah born 1863, Thomas born 1866, Ann born 1868, Ada born 1871, Ellen born 1875, Mary born 1880 and Herbert born 1884.  All were born at Weirbrook. Are there any records of their baptisms, marriages and/or deaths in West Felton parish registers? Thomas Jones was a sawyer, his father also Thomas Jones was a swayer and the family moved to Weirbrook from Ruyton XI Towns probably in the 1850s.

There is no mention of this family in the PRs for Felton. Try non-conformist.

Thank you for your information, especially the news that the burials of my ancestors do not feature in West Felton Parish Records. I know that my grandfather was CoE on his marriage and burial in Richmond, Surrey but two of his sisters were buried at the United Reform Church at Weirbrook near West Felton.  Perhaps their parents Thomas and Ellen Jones were also nonconformist rather than CoE. I haven't yet found the christening dates of their children which again indicates possible nonconformist persuasions.

Roger

I know this post is 2 years old now, but I am interested to know how you had got on with your sawyer Jones ancestor.

I also have a sawyer working in West Felton in 1851 in my own family tree. He is  my ggg grandfather, Richard Jones, born in Ruyton XI towns in around 1817. I can't see a Thomas there, but I wonder if there is some connection.

Hello Mike
Last year I visited the Shropshire records office in Shrewsbury and found the burials of Thomas Jones and his wife Ellen in the burial registers for Ruyton XI Towns. Both were buried at Pradoe Church near Weirbrook but their burial entries were in the register for Ruyton because Pradoe was in the Ruyton parish. Thomas died in 1916 and Ellen in 1928. The register stated Ellen died in Liverpool and gave the address. As a result, I was able to track a distant cousin that I hadn't heard of for very many years.

I have traced my Jones family back to the marriage of Richard Jones to Sarah Williams on 17 April 1800 in Ruyton. I do not know if they were born in Ruyton but the 1851 census for Ruyton lists a Richard Jones of about the right age, Sawyer born in St Martins, Shropshire. This could be my ancestor.
Richard is a name given subsequently in my family but I haven't detected one born in or about 1817. My other two Richards were born in 1805 and 1842.
I do know that other Jones families were living in Ruyton at this time and that sawyers were employed on the local estates at the time and for many years after. Therefore, I cannot establish any link between my and your families but I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was link somehow in the dim and distant past. No doubt our ancestors knew each other.
