Thanks so much for the feedback, am amazed at how quickly you found the two overseas ones. As very much a beginner at searching I have no idea about how you did it.
It is really interesting to know of them, you have exploded my tentative theory about getting a fresh start in a new country so a new variation on the surname too.
Have found the emigration record for the family from the UK, eldest son and new ( no.1 of 3 ) wife arrived in Victoria in May 1856, followed by parents and younger siblings in Jun1856.
That record showed them as 1xF in the computer lists, must check the microfiche record of the ship list to see how they were recorded there.
They were teachers, so expect they were fairly precise about spelling etc. Thanks again. T
