Ongs in Norfolk

Hi there good people.

I've heard that the Ongs who have lived in Norfolk for the best part of 300 years originated in Belgium.

I'd be obliged if anybody is able to confirm this and fill me in on the details.

I have a 1783 marriage of Humphrey to Susannah Ratcliff in Norwich St Stephens.  Humphrey sounds a very English name to me, so assume at least one generation prior to that date.

I have no info on this, however I wondered where the name originated.
I have some Ongs on the edge of my tree. So I will be interested in any outcome.

They seem to be established here in the early 1600s. 
They are widespread in Norfolk from Kings Lynn eastward.
The ones I am following are silk and cotton weavers from Norwich, so I wondered whether they were Huguenots.
ANGIER / AUNGIER is a Hugenot surname, but that is merely a shot in the dark.

I have a book called "The Mother of Necton" which was written by Mary Nichols, Grandaughter of Eliza Ong whose family lived in Necton, Norfolk.

From Free Reg:

Baptisms 08 Sep 1873 ONG Eunice Mary Baldry Norfolk Blo Norton
Baptisms 09 Nov 1678 ONG Susany Norfolk Blo Norton
Baptisms 14 Dec 1680 ONG Sarah Norfolk Blo Norton

So they have been in Norfolk since at least 1678.

Have you checked the Norfolk Pilot on Family Search as they have lots of Parish Register images from a lot of parishes in Norfolk

Hi,

Just thought I'd mention that there were also people with the surname Ong in Essex, I noticed them in I believe the Chelmsford PRs, not sure though as this was quite a few years ago.  The reason I noticed them was because some friends of around 30 years here in Australia have the surname Ong, the difference is they (friends) are of Chinese origin.   I can't be 100% sure but I believe the Ongs I spotted were in the 1700s.

I have been using the pilot and Norfolk PRs on line and FreeReg to get where I am... so need people who've studied the originals, really. 

I think in order to progress, I need Norfolk Ong families, alive today, who know their history!!!

Hi! I have some ONG info- my great-grandmother was Elizabeth ONG (born 26th Jan 1850 at St Peter Hungate Norwich). I have traced her back to Humphrey and Susannah who are mentioned elsewhere in this thread. I will attempt to attach the one photograph I have of Elizabeth ONG.

I have approx 30 ONG ancestors on my tree chart - I can send further information to anyone who is interested. The ideal way would be via home e mail (is one permitted to publish this info on this site?) A slightly out of date version of this tree is on view in both the ancestry.co.uk and GenesReunited websites.

Hoping to hear from someone else in the family.

Elizabeth's father William Ong c1822 is the brother of Thomas Ong 1821 who is the guy in the line I'm researching.
