I think this is more likely to be the Hedley-Smith marriage

Marriages Jun 1914
Hedley  Margaret  Smith  Tynemouth  10b 526
Smith  William B  Hedley  Tynemouth  10b 526

NB
1. its for Margaret Hedley so likely the same one who married George Hedley
2. Its in 1914 just before the birth of young Margaret in 1916 so explains why no other children
3. Mother and daughter then share the name Margaret
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Thank you everybody this is absolutely wonderful!

So this much be George Hedley who was born in Tynemouth in 1860 and died 1900, which would explain everything.

I looked at the 1861 census and the 1871 census and the 1871 census appears more fitting.

He doesn't seem to appear on the 1861 census. There are many of them but all over Northumberland.

I wondered if you could tell me the best way to find this out as people here seem to be better at searching than I am. This below could be him but it is hard to say exactly

Its down to elimination,
Rootschatter senior all ways advised me to check birth, baptism, census every thing ,as it is so easy to just claim a family and go down the wrong path ,
as you have the census details you need to go onto the baptisms for Tynemouth and double check the details, they some times give extra details ,

I wondered if you could tell me the best way (forward)

I think you need to proceed with caution as Hedley is quite a common name and so easy to get the families mixed up. Also Finding the right Margaret McGaw (McCaw) might not be obvious. Altthough there is one born in 1862 in Tynemouth that would make her quite old to have young Margaret in 1916 (although not impossible)

Therefore I would start by getting the 1898 marriage certificate to see what it says about their ages and their parents names and occupations.

I agree with Radcliffe that you need to check as much as possible to ensure you get the right people
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. I finally got the certificate and it reads:

1898 District of Tynemouth

Married 27th August 1898

George Hedley: Father of groom is George Hedley age 25, Bath Street Walker, profession Iron Ship Rivetter,, father George Hedley deceased (brick yard labourer)

Margaret McGaw, 23 years, Bath Street Walker, father Thomas McGaw (iron ship driller)

Witnessed were James and Annie Virtue.

The problem now is that there are so many George Hedley's, however his father must have died before the wedding took place. I found a George Hedley, who was very old, and was a tile maker at 6 Hunters Tile Sheds in Longebenton area in 1861, who had a child called George, who also was born about 1873, but I don't know if it's the same one. George Snr died in July 1898, which could have spurred on a wedding the month later perhaps?

if anybody has any suggestions, as always would be greatly appreciated :)
