1901 Census or birth look up - William Hedley
« on: Thursday 14 October 10 20:56 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I wondered if somebody would be able to look up any information related to my great grandfather William Hedley as I have hit a brick wall.

I know that he married Kathleen T Morley at St Cuthbert's Church in Billingham in December 1925

He died on 15th February 1963 and was born on 14th February. He was about 64 when he died and was an only child and his mother later remarried and her surname was Smith

I think he was born in Newcastle, but I can't confirm that 100%

Any help at all would be appreciated

Best regards

CLaire

Hi

This is proving difficult as there are quite a few children called William Hedley in that area in 1901. Are we looking for just him and his mother, or is there a father? What does it say on the marriage certificate?

Thanks for the reply. Another RC member found this source for the marriage:

Marriages Dec ¼ 1925  William  Hedley   and   Kathleen T Morley     Stockton    10a   101

I don't have a certificate of the marriage at the moment but will try and obtain one.

I remember my grandfather talking a lot about Billingham/Haverton Hill and Cowpen Bewley when I was younger, but i doubt this helps much!

I just spoke to my Gran, who has further confused matters. She says that his ashes are buried alongside his parents at St Cuthberts Church in Billingham.

She doesn't know the first names of the parents. This is where it gets confusing as she says that William's half sister was called Margaret L Smith. She died in Devon in 2003 and was born in 1916. She was affectionately called Auntie Peggy. I found her birth certificate and it says her mother's maiden name was McCaw.

Margaret was the half sister of William, and they shared a mother. However, with such a big gap between ages (b1899 and b1916), I can't possibly see how they are actually related, unless William's father died at quite a young age, between 1899 and 1916.

Don't know if this helps but there is this possible McGaw - Hedley marriage (NB its for a Margaret as the potential mother and George as the potential father)

Marriages Sep 1898

Down  Louisa    Tynemouth  10b 517
HEDLEY  George     Tynemouth  10b 517    <<<<<<<<<<
Lashley  James     Tynemouth  10b 517
McGaw  Margaret     Tynemouth  10b 517    <<<<<<<<<

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

From 1901 census this seems to confrim that James married Louisa, and therefore George married Margaret

Name:  James Lashley
Spouse:  Louisa Lashley
Birth:  abt 1875 - Seaton Delavel, Northumberland, England
Residence:  1901 - Newsham Freeholds, Cowpen, Northumberland, England
