FOULDS - COLNE c1800
« on: Thursday 14 October 10 16:14 BST (UK) »
I have been struggling for many years to find anymore details on my FOULDS ancestors in Colne. I am back to a John Foulds who married a Mary. They have 2 children I know of. John born in 1813, and Thomas born in 1816. These last two were christened in St Bartholomew's.

I would very much like to find out more about this family. In particular more details on John and Mary, are there any marriage records that could be looked up to give me an idea of their birth years and Mary's maiden name. Does this family appear on the 1841 census.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Thanks Rosie, I had not come across  that site before. It looks like that is the John and Mary I am looking for. I did a search for children and find several which match. The occupation of John on them all, inc the marriage is weaver so hopefully this is the right one. Now I need to delve a little further as I would like birth details for John and Mary(Burrows). It is interesting to see on the marriage record the witness of James Ellis. One of their children married an Ellis, I wonder if there is a connection here.

Is there any records of the 1841 census on line so I can try and find my Foulds family on there.

Hi,

This looks like the same family on the 1841 census:

Bradley Lane Head, Great Marsden

John Folds, 60 Cotton Weaver
Mary, 55
Thomas, 20
Isaac, 20,
Jacob, 15
Mary, 15

All born in County

In the 1841 census ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 0 or 5.  So for example John could be 60 to 64.  Mary could be 55 to 59 etc.

Regards,
Mo

Hi again,

Using the OPC site that Rosie gave you there is is a possible burial for Mary:

13th April, 1861 at St. John the Evangelist, Great Marsden
Mary Foulds,
Age 74
Abode: Bradley Lane Head

I can`t see John but the burials only start at 1849.

Mo

Hi Mo, thanks for that. It has been a sticking point for me for years this family. I wonder if the 1851 Census is transcribed and available on line to be able to find this family?

Hi Kevin...Here are most of the family in 1851....

HO107/2254 folios 164&165.
Bradley Land Head, Great Marsden.

John Foulds (H) 69  Weaver.            b.
Mary....(wife)  64                              b.
Thomas Foulds..(son)Un. 34 Weaver.  b. Marsden.
John Holgate (Gr.son) 17  Labourer     b.       "
Elizabeth Holgate (Gr.dau) 10              b.        "
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The birthplaces for John & Mary are a little mixed.
John says Bradley Hollow and nothing for Mary...but the house above is un-occupied but has a birthplace for Marsden..Which would make me believe that Marsden is meant for John Foulds and Bradley Hollow for Mary Foulds...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1861 Thomas Foulds is at the same address as head still unmarried but with him is his younger brother Jacob Foulds, also un-married aged 37, both are Power Loom Weavers (Cotton)

Hi LL,

I agree that it is more than likely that John was born Marsden and Mary was born Readley Hollows .  This is now Reedley Hallows.

This is all really good information, thanks. The HOLGATE name is totally new to me.  I have found the marriage

Marriage: 8 Mar 1824 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
John Holgate - Weaver Bachelor of Colne
Betty Foulds - (X), of Colne
Witness: Christopher Emmott, (X); William Walton, (X)
Married by Banns by: P.Henderson ass.curate
    Register: Marriages 1819 - 1825, Page 253, Entry 757
    Source: LDS Film 1471065

which appears to be right. Could someone please see if this family are on the 1841 and 1851 census records.

I can't seem to find a baptism for Betty that would fit with John and Mary as her parents.

Now I have a birth year of abt 1782 for John Foulds, I also need to try and find his baptism.

It is so good to finally make a little  headway with this line, thanks to all
