Potter/Faith/Freeman, Portrush!!
« on: Thursday 14 October 10 16:04 BST (UK) »

Hello all!!

So basically, I'm looking into my family tree (like everyone else!), and am looking for any information on my maternal great-grandfather, George Potter, who was born (so I'm told) in Portrush in 1900.

By the time of the 1901 census, he was living in Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, but his place of birth is listed as Ireland.

His father, James Potter, was born in Port Glasgow, but all HIS brothers and sisters--according to 1901 census again--were born in Ireland. He was married to Margaret Faith (born Ireland), and they were married March 28th 1899 in Portrush.

The parents of James Potter are George Potter (born England) and Mary Jane Freeman, she being born in Ireland too, and they were married 7th December 1872 in Ireland.

As you can see from the above, there's a mix of Ireland and Port Glasgow, but the Irish link is a bit hard to look into, so if anyone has any more information/links on the above people, I'd be delighted to hear from you!

Many thanks,
                    Stewart Potter.

Will have a look later to see if I can find any details but do you know anything about Margaret Faith's family?

There is a likely birth registration for your George Potter "who was born (so I'm told) in Portrush in 1900."
George POTTER Jan./Mar.1900 Ballymoney registration district volume 1 page 137.
Note: depending on the townland George could have been born near Portrush but in Ballymoney registration district.

The parents' marriage is also in the civil index-
James POTTER Jan./Mar.1899 Coleraine registration district volume 1 page 499.
Margaret FAITH - same details
Note: Portrush is just outside the town of Coleraine.

In the 1901 census there was a Thomas Faith and wife Jane with a son Thomas (retired soldier) in Portrush- also in the household is a grandson (born in Scotland) who's father was likely in the military.

Hello there!

MAAAAANY thanks for your reply!

Taking your first post into account about Margaret Faith, the only information I've managed to find so far on her is her mention in the same 1901 census, residing in Port Glasgow with parents-in-law George and Mary Jane; husband, James; his brother and sisters, George, Henrietta and Harriet, and their two kids, George Potter (1 year-old) and daughter, Henrietta.

Interestingly--again in the 1901 census for Port Glasgow--I did find a Daniel Potter (born England) married to a Catherine Jane Potter who was born in Ireland, leading me to think that Daniel and George were brothers (both born England), and that they've married sisters Mary Jane and Catherine Jane as they have middle-name and 'Ireland' in common--that, however, is just a supposition so far!

With regard to '1900 George Potter' and his parents' marriage, many thanks for finding the registration details! Is there any way I can get a detailed look at the info the references contain, or will that involve a trip to Ireland?! :p

The mention of the Faiths is certainly an interesting one, but--like I said--I don't know much more about them! I'm really a bit confused as to how to look further into the Irish side of my family, and as the 1891 and 1881 census are destroyed, any tips as to how I can delve further back??

Thanks again so much!
                                    Stewart Potter.

See Introduction to Irish Records for more infomation about what's in Irish certificates (nothing as good as Scottish ones), how to order them, etc.

Just in case Thomas and Jane Faith are related to Margaret (Faith) Potter-

Thomas Faith married Jane O'Neill/O'Neal- 4 children listed in IGI (www.familysearch.org)
1. Thomas born 5 March 1869 Ireland
2. Mary born 10 June 1873 Ireland
3. John born 20 Feb.1877 Portrush, Co.Antrim
4. William Andrew born 8 Jan.1879 Ireland

Thomas Faith (b.c1841) is listed in 1901 census but by 1911 his wife Jane is a widow. Death registration Apr./June 1904 Ballymoney district (age 56) volume 1 page 86.

Grandson Archie McFarland (born c1892 Scotland) is with grandmother Jane in 1911 but now religion is listed as Roman Catholic. There's also a grand-daughter Ida who's surname is unclear in the original record.

Hello!

Wow! That's quite something!

I imagine you'll have read the previous posts, so you'll have seen that I don't really know much about the Faith-side of my family; the one link that I know for definite is Margaret Faith who was married to James Potter in Portrush in 1899.

Thomas Faith was mentioned as a possible relation of hers, so if she by any chance appears on your tree, then please let me know! :)
