Gallivan Clark County Ohio
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 17:51 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a birth cert for my gg-grandmother. Family history that I do have: Mary Gallivan b sept-nov 1869. Her parents are John b. 1830 and Kate b.1836 both born Irland. Brothers Timothy born in Mass and James and William born in Ohio. I called the place that should have the cert and they did not have one indexed. That lady is going to check the actual log, but she has to go thru the whole year of 1869, so it may take a while.
Mary ended up in Chicago and married by about 1894 if I recall. All of her childern's birth certs list her palce of birth as Plattsburg, and one did say Vienna, but that was all still Clark County either way. I have not been able to figure out where her brothers or parents went either. I have the 1870 census for them and possibly an 1880, if I have the right family, which would have placed them in Springfield Ohio (also Clark CO.)I am kind of stuck!

Any help appreciated.

Do you have her in the 1900 Census?  It's not always right, but it usually gives a month and year of birth.  That might help narrow it down.

Do you have a death or marriage record for her?  What was her married name?

Married to John McNulty in Chicago Nov 8, 1893. The marriage liscence lists her at 24 years of age. I have that liscence so in 1900 she is already married in Chicago. On the 1870 census she is listed at 8/12 and it list the birth month as Nov. (1869 I am assuming). The 1880 census shows her at 11 years of age in Springfield Ohio, with the oldest brother gone already.

This is possibly a long shot, but there is a directory listing for her at an address in Springfield as well in 1890-1891. Looking into that a little more.

I posted this in the look up request section, but not sure if many people check there so I am posting here too. Hope that is ok?

I am looking for a birth cert for my g-grandmother. (and her family for that matter before she gets to chicago and marries in 1893) Family history that I do have: Mary Gallivan b sept-nov 1869. Her parents are John b. 1830 and Kate b.1836 both born Ireland, one cert shows them from County Mayo. Brothers Timothy b. 1858 in Mass and James b. 1866 and William b. 1668 born in Ohio. I called the place that should have the cert and they did not have one indexed. That lady is going to check the actual log, but she has to go thru the whole year of 1869, so it may take a while.

Mary ended up in Chicago and married by Nov 1893, at the age od 24 to John McNulty. All of her childern's birth certs list her palce of birth as Plattsburg, and one did say Vienna, but that was all still Clark County either way. I have not been able to figure out where her brothers or parents went either or where they were before her birth. I have the 1870 census for them in Clark County, and possibly an 1880, if I have the right family, which would have placed them in Springfield Ohio (also Clark CO.) I am kind of stuck and it is driving me nuts!!!

Other possible spelling of name-Galivan, Galvin.

Any help appreciated.

Sorry about that!

Got word back from the County that they have no birth cert for her. :(
She sad that it may not have ever been recorded. Now I really need to find info on the rest of the family.

Hello doggydetailer1.

This look like your family in 1880 Census Springfield, Clark, Ohio which you said earlier you may possibly have.

John Gelvin 50 Born Ireland. Labourer.
Kate Gelvin 45 Born Ireland
William Gelvin 15 Born Ohio
James Gelvin 13 Born Ohio
Mary Gelvin 11 Born Ohio

Timothy born 1858 Massachusetts is not with the family on this Census

1900 Census Athens Township (Incl. Athens State Hospital), Athens, Ohio.
James Gallivan Born Sept 1868 Ohio appears to be a patient.

That is the 1880 family I was refering to. All the info does match and the son that was not on that census makes sense as he would have been old enough to be on his own or married. (or possibly even dead) I do have the Athens info on James as well, I am just not sure that he is the same James. I cannot find death certs, that match anyone. (or births actually) If I could find any of that, I would probably be able to do more research, I am at a standstill! LOL

Thanks!

There's a death record for a James Gallivan of the right age who died 9 Apr. 1905 in Athens Co., Ohio here:  http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#  Unfortunately, the statewide vital registration began in Ohio in 1908 and the certificates from 1908 and beyond have spaces for parents' names.  This record has no parents' names.

Thanks Shelly, that is the "brick wall" I wish some of the index things would at least list parents names and birthdates. I would then order the certificate and pay for it. With no parents names, I dont want to spend the money if it might not be them!
Funny, the first few weeks of this project were pretty easy, now as I get further back, the difficulty begins!
Thanks again!
