Thanks again. I do want to spend some time on Google Earth to find the area.  So the latest bit of info is really usefull, as it gives me a little more insight into the area he lived. 

I did have a quick go last night searching for the works, and found the development you mention, so once again the tip will be usefull.

I came across a 1909 directory for Pittsburgh. Mary Baker is listed as the widow of Arthur J. Baker. She is living at 2708 Shelly, occupation confectioner. This seems to mean that Arthur J. Baker died in 1908 or late 1907.

If you click on the Images link on the Pitt Digital Library home page, and put "Jones and Laughlin" in the Search box, you'll get 500 or so images. Unfortunately, not many of them deal with the South Side Works in the 1900s and 1910s, but there are some pictures of bars on the South Side that give you an impression of what it was like there.
