Image on glass - Please restore
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 14:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,

This is a picture of my 2 x great grandparents Robert and Elizabeth. The image is on glass and in a pretty bad way.

Please is it possible to restore it?

Best wishes,

Carole

Following advice from China I've amended the title of the thread and added a further scan.

PrueM would be the one to answer your question...she will probably see it on her own but I'll PM her anyway.

She's in Oz so who knows what time it is there :P :D

Hi Carole  :)

Thanks to China for the heads-up...lovely photo on glass (AKA Ambrotype) but as you say it is deteriorating.  I think you do have some image loss there, the black areas showing are background, where the image area has been lost  :-\

A photograph conservator could stabilise this for you so that no further loss occurs.

In the meantime, one of our fabulous digital restorers will be able to make a lovely reproduction for you - I'm sure they're working on it now!  :D

Cheers
Prue

Thank you for your quick reply China.  :)

Many thanks for the information Prue.

It would be wonderful to have a clearer image especially of my gg grandmother as she died shortly after this picture was taken.

Best wishes,

Carole

Hi Carole...as digital restoration on this board seems to be your best bet, if you don't get one in a couple of days (it won't be an easy one so give it a little time), either start a new thread with it asking for a restore, or go back to the first post in this thread and amend the title with words like "please restore" to indicate you would like it done. Many restorers, due to bandwidth restrictions, don't revisit old threads.

If you repost the photo in a new thread, you will have to give it a new file name...just add a couple of letters or numbers to it and that will be fine.

Cheers,
