Does anybody know?
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 17:29 BST (UK) »
In the 1901 census my ancestors are shown as living in house No. 9 Labbamologga East. Is there any cross reference say from Griffiths Valuation or similar to determine the exact location of House No. 9. Obviously this is just the ninth house enumerated. Any help greatly appreciated.

Can't speak for Cork, but I faced the same problem with a house in Co. Antrim. The house numbers in the census  were just a private administrative numbering system used by the enumerator, to separate each property. No link to any other source and different numbers in the 2 censuses 1901/1911.

In my case, which involved a rural address, I made local enquiries in the townland. I had 13 properties on the census. I found some are still owned by descendants of the 1911 census and, using details of the outbuildings, I was able to eliminate most of the others till I found the one I was interested in. The current owner then helped me and found a lease with the name of the ancestor who had lived there in 1901, confirming I had found the right property. It took quite a bit of work! Don't know of any other easier method.

The order of the houses enumerated on the census can sometimes coincide with the plot numbers on Griffth's - but this does not happen all that often.

Similar to the way Elwyn mentions...the best way I found to try to link Griffth's holdings with the census is to list  out the surnames for the townland on Griffith's on a spreadsheet and the list the occupants in the same townland on Griffth's in another column. If you are lucky you may be able to line them up, if not sometimes you can find a possible match by eliminating names from both side to see which sites of land are left over.

This can be difficult is if the townland is large and there are a large number of holdings.

From local Civic centre proceed to No. 1, walking round houses in order. Interpolate between two presently known properties. Consult local Knowledge. Walking route would be the most efficient probably a circle or figure of eight.

Thank you all so much for time. Looks like leg work is the answer. I identified the land from Griffiths Valuation and have determined the location on Google Earth. The only answer is a visit. Thank you all once again.
