Hibernia College, Dublin
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 17:00 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of a Hibernia College in Dublin? My cousin who is in her 80's has a strong memory of being told one of our ancestors sent his sons there to be educated, circa the 1860's. The only reference I can find is a modern online college. Our family were poor farming Catholics, but the ancestor concerned joined the British Army in 1852 and travelled extensively, one daughter being born in India, so I'm wondering if this could be a reason for educating the boys at home ( he only rose to the rank of sergent so would still have been living frugally)? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

I've seen a few mentions of a Hibernian College/School in Dublin at that time, and it seems to have some military connections.

Thom's 1863 lists

Hibernian Marine School, 28 Rogerson's quay
  Hibernian Military School, Phoenix park

same two listing in 1872

Thanks Shane, after a bit more exploring I've discovered there was a school at Phoenix Park from 1765 until 1924 for boys either orphaned or of serving army fathers. The records are not digitalised and some were lost in the blitz. Thanks for your help
