Hi

If you don't know any first names - how will you know if you have the right people?

These are the number of people with that surname in Sutherland on each census.  As you can see - you would need to have much more info to determine which of these entries belong to your research

1841 = 465
1851 = 593
1861 = 604
1871 = 507
1881 = 536
1891 = 504
1901 = 381

Do you know where I might find the Laird of the Gunn Clans name? I have checked:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Gunn
www.rampantscotland.com/clans/blclangunn.htm
books.google.com(the timeline results for gunn clan)
and scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I dont have internet access at my home, and Im trying to research the best I can. My grandma started telling me stories so I began research.

I found this on one of the Google links.  There are a number of "hits" to the question "is there a chieftain of the Gunn clan in Sutherland"

http://www.clangunn.us/gunn.htm

Quote
The chiefship of the Clan has been dormant since the death of the son of George Gunn of Rhives in 1874. The head of the Clan, in the absence of a recognized chief is Iain Gunn of Banniskirk, who has been appointed Commander of the Clan by the Lord Lyon King of Arms at the request of the landed and armigerous members of the Clan.

The Clan Gunn Society which was formed in 1960 to promote a spirit of kinship among members of the clan throughout the world acquired the Old Parish Church at Latheron as a Clan Heritage Center. The Clan gathers in Caithness every three years.

Gunn as a family name is more commonly found in Caithness rather than Sutherland. There's Neil M Gunn, for example, a famous Scottish novelist from the Lybster area, but you'll really need to get some Christian names or you're not going to be able to get very far without getting into a terrible tangle.

Hi
My grandmother was Christina Henderson, from Sutherland, and she talked about connections to Neil Gunn, the writer.  By sheer chance, I found this gravestone near where my mother now lives in edinburgh.  As you'll see, there are Gunn connections in the inscribed names.  (Although my grandmother was also a nurse, the dates prove this is not her grave!)

My Mother was a Gunn, her father was William Gunn. Her Grandparents were John Gunn and Bessie Gunn All born in Durness, I have a lot of information on this family.
The Gunn museum in Caithness has a lot of information.
There was more than one Gunn family in Durness and Laid.
If you have some more information I can check if there is any connection
