Help to identify Photograph of Policeman
« on: Monday 11 October 10 19:58 BST (UK) »
Hi
I wonder if anyone could identify a photo of a policeman ?

It was sent to my grandfather Frank Charles Rose and reads :

To Frank, Merry Xmas 1928

Helmet Badge reads - J 261

Frank Rose was born 1899 Bromley, Kent, moved to Cardiff - early 1920's

Any help would be fantastic

Regards

Rob Rose

Hi Rob Rose,
I was just browsing and came across your post, if you go to www.britishpolicehelmet.co.uk there is a near identical helmet from the Bristol Constabulary of 1930 with a number like yours, I suspect the letter J is a Divisional letter.

Maybe it's me but isn't his name P.C. Rose? Could he be Frank Charles Rose' grandson or nephew?

Regards

James

The helmet plate looks like it is a Metropolitan Police Night helmet.

The J will be for the Division.

You could start here!

http://www.met.police.uk/history/records.htm

I believe that the only other helmet plate of that design is the Ministry of Defence Police, in that period it was probally a sub division of the Met.

Hi

Thanks for the replies

I have found that J Division was Bethnal Green - Met Police.

The name PC Rose was written much later, so there is no guarantee he is called Rose
The name Frank Rose - he is my grandfather - I have yet to find any relations who were policemen during this period.

I have a suspicion that the officer may be Henry Rose b1906 Lewisham ? a nephew of Frank Rose

Hi,

James, P.C. is not his initials but stands for Police Constable which means he was a beat cop not an officer on the force.

J.A.M,
As a former Policeman I am well aware what P.C. means, I was trying to suggest that as it says P.C. Rose (police constable) on the pic that that was his name, it wasn't until a  posting  today by robrose that suggests that the name had been added later, and that his name is unknown.
