Help with ages and a restore please
« on: Monday 11 October 10 19:16 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful for a tidy up of this photo please and anything else you care to do.  :)

I am trying to work out who is who but I am hopeless with ages!

There is Joseph b 1886,  Charles b 1887, William 1888, Adolphus 1896, Hector 1900, Trevor 1901,
Richard 1902 and Sylvester 1905.  A couple of them seem obvious but others I don't have a clue.

I am presuming that the oldest man is the grandfather, do you think the resemblance is there?  Grandfather died in 1913.

Any help would be lovely! :)

Thanks,

Elin

I've got a problem with this.Assuming this was taken in the UK most of these chaps would have been away fighting from 1914 so 1914-18 seems out of the question but 1913 would make the youngest about 8 & the lad at the front looks a lot older than that as do the 3 next youngest who look 18 -20.
The chap in the centre is the most modern as he has a collar bar which is associated with later in the decade.
A couple have small starched collars which was the norm throughout the decade with the others wearing the formal winged collar. Was there a wedding going on?
On balance this looks post war,1918 - 20ish.
Is this a postcard?
Can you show the back?
Style & stamp box might reveal something.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your thoughts!  It looks like the older man cannot be the grandfather. :(
The photo was taken in Monmouthshire and I know that the two oldest brothers did serve.  I think that several of them remained home because they were doing work essential to the war.

My aunt has the original photograph, I don't think that it was a postcard but I will check that with
her.  It could be a wedding, a couple are wearing button holes, I'll check out the brothers wedding dates.  Wouldn't they all be wearing button holes?

What age would you think that the youngest one was?

Thank you so much for your help.

I have just been checking the brothers' marriages.  William and Charles both married in the third quarter of 1912.  I have a possible marriage for Joseph in 1915 but it was in Glamorgan and so
out of area.  The next one is Hector in 1921 and then Adolphus in 1924.  I am now clinging vainly on to the hope that the photo is from a double wedding of William and Charles, which would explain the two buttonholes. :-\

As an observation, the 2 that served are wearing civvies so probably after demob. in 1919.
If this is a wedding photo it may not have been taken on the day, this wasn't unusual.
as the chap centre is the one with the corsage it may be his.
The older chap may be an Uncle & older brother to the father.
