Hi there,
this is great- I am descended from Robert Murdock and Martha Gillespie. My great grandfather was their son James (born 1858 and not listed on the IGI). They ended up moving to Glasgow, and my great-grandfather and later his brother Robert (born 1868) moved to Saskatchewan to homestead around 1890 (I'm Canadian). I've got a photo of James and Robert from around the turn of the century.
I'd love to find out more about the Derry Gillespies if you do have info.
All the best
Andy

Hello Andy, great to hear from you and I'll say welcome on behalf of the other contributors to the topic.  To actually find another cousin is wonderful. My home email is (*) if you would like to reply there, so we can exchange documents.  My Joseph Gillespie was the younger brother of your Martha, I have Martha's marriage certificate if you don't yet have that. Do you know anything of the other brothers and sisters? Joseph emigrated alone to Queensland, Australia and married soon after arrival, had nine children [all in Qld] of which the eldest was my grandfather James. Yes, me too.  Looking forward to further contact, Your 'cousin' Loris

My apologies, Aghadowey. I guess I just got a bit too enthusiastic. It's great to have this on-going forum.          Regards              Loris

Hi Loris,
great to hear from you. I know nothing of the Gillespies, or the Murdochs, beyond the generation of Martha and James, so I would love to see the marriage certificate. I only found out recently that the family was from Ireland- I had found my GGrandfather's birth certificate (in Glasgow) and had been searching in vain in Scotland and then remembered that somone in the family had said the Murdochs were from Ireland, so I was delighted to find them there- especially since Irish records are somewhat scarce. Interesting to hear about your family in Australia. I lived there myself for six years when I was a kid, in Avalon near Sydney.
cheers
Andy

Hello again Andy, I would be pleased to exchange Martha [Gillespie] Murdoch's marriage record for her son James' birth certificate!  From the dates, James would be Martha's first or second child; would you agree that they must have gone to Scotland soon after marriage, returned to N Ire, then back to Glasgow?
Aghadowey, could you explain how I should arrange a PM? Or do you have any other suggestion please?              Regards from Loris

Aghadowey, I've now looked up the Help list as I should have done earlier, and will try the PM system by following directions after a few more posts.   from Loris

Hi Loris,
I don't have the birth certificate of James- I have his marriage certificate. I could send you that for sure.

Thanks Andy, that would be just as welcome. There are details under Help of how to send a Personal Message, but you might be better at understanding that than I am.  Until we can work out how to make contact directly, I'll transcribe the marriage details here.  'Marriage at Articlave, in the parish of Dunboe, in the county of Londonderry; 18 December 1856, Robert Murdoch, of full age, bachelor, baker; residence: Newtown limavardy? City, son of Robert Murdoch, farmer. - to   Martha Jane Gillespie, full age, spinster, - , residence:  Exorna, dau of James Gillespie, farmer.  Married in the first Dunboe Meeting house - Presbyterian - by license, by me, William Lyle.  Hope this helps a little, regards from Loris

It may be of note that there were at least two large Gillespie families in the Limavady area at this time. They stretched from Limavady, through Ballykelly to Eglinton.
