Hello Emma,

I have been interested in your trying to find out what happened to Rosanna Stevens.   I am the grandson of William Stevens born 10th May 1877 and who died on 1st August, 1906.   I wondered what your interest was is the Stevens family?   I have been looking at my family on my mother's side as she was a Stevens but I am afraid I haven't been able to find any more trace of Rosanna than you have.

Interestingly, I have found a story of two families who lived in Fonthill Gifford on the internet.  Thomas Burt and William Burt, William being the father of Hanna and my great grandmother Maria.   It is a fascinating story and well worth looking at if you haven't found it.   Derek

Thomas Stevens and Hannah Burt are my  3x great grandparents.  I descend from their son Lot.

I've not come across the story of Thomas Burt and William Burt if you can point me in the right direction that would be great :)

Hello Emma,

To find the story of the two families I put Fonthill Gifford into the Google Search and then choose "Fonthill Gifford in the Mid Nineteenth Century" from the list of subjects.   I hope you find it.

I am convinced that Thomas and Hanna Stevens left Wiltshire to go to Forcett to find work in the limestone quarries.   William also worked in the quarries until he became a professional cricketer.   He died aged 29 having fallen off his bicycle reruning from a cricket match just over a mile from Richmond on the road to Forcett.

Last autumn I was in Durham,  my grandson is at the university, and I visited Forcett Church in the hope of finding a sign of my grandfather William Stevens.   I had an idea where to look from a photograph circa 1906,  there was no sign of William but I found a small headstone, rather eroded, of Lot Stevens, do you know of this?

I have several photographs of Maria Burt who married James Hockett and Willaim who married Alice Hockett, his cousin.

Were Thomas & Hannah the parents of your William?

Hello Emma,

Yes William was the youngest child of Thomas and Hannah,  he is on your list of siblings,  he was born at Eppleby in 1877.

It is sad to learn how William's life ended so young, his elder brother Lot also died young(ish) aged 39 2 years earlier albeit not in such tragic circumstances and their father Thomas died Tragically in 1897 after falling from his horse and trap.
