Ancestry occupation listed as 'Hooter'
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 22:16 BST (UK) »
Hello,
This is my first question and boy it's a doozy... What is a 'hooter' as occupation? My ancestor is listed on his son's birth certificate as being a 'hooter' in 1854. They lived in Dudley so I am assuming this has something to do with mining.

Thanks
Kingwell, Devon
Green in Dudley, Glouc. and Nebraska USA

I am currently working on a massive project, based on my family's ancestry.  For information relating to the art tour, please visit its blog at

Thanks

Hi, welcome to Rootschat

Have you found him on the 1851 or 1861 census, what does it say there? If you can't find him, put the details on here and I'm sure someone will find him for you.

Two possible definitions  in a coal mine;
A Hooker-up, or incline boy/lad attached and detached the tubs to a haulage rope or chain at the top or bottom of an incline. A Hooker-on, aka Hanger-on was an assistant onsetter who coupled empty tubs to the rope at the bottom of a self-acting incline.

I wonder if he was some type of watchman? Say a fire watcher, looking out for possible causes of danger in an establishment which handled highly flammmable items.

glad it does not have the same meaning as today

Hooker A reaper, or a worker in textile industry who operated a machine which laid fabric flat in uniform folds
