Dating and maybe a tidy/colour for this victorian lady
« on: Friday 08 October 10 11:13 BST (UK) »
Please can someone help me date this lady.  The photographer is T Fossey of Hackney Road but I can't find him on the online photolondon list of photographers.  Looking at her I'm guessing early 1860's with that bonnet and the big bow underneath and the shawl.

If anyone fancies ridding the photo of the blemishes or adding some colour that would be nice too.  I am getting photoshop elements for Xmas to hope to join you then with my efforts once I'm up to speed.

Here she is, with the back image to follow in the next post.

Hello Joanna
I think you'll be joining us for dating too,1860's is the right answer.
I would say around mid decade as she doesn't have the full crinoline ( 7 hoops ) of earlier
instead settling for the lower 3.She doesn't appear to have her hair in the style of the later decade
hence the date.
It was usual for a lady to remove her left glove to show her marital status but in this she hasn't.

Thank you Jim.  I've stored that little nugget about the number of hoops on the crinoline away in my brain for future reference!  I can guess but you guys really know your costume styles etc and its nice to get confirmation of my guess from someone who really knows  :)

Also 1860's photo's are full length with a blurry edge as lenses were still quite primitive & the subject had to be quite a distance from the camera in order to be in focus.By 1870 they improved & the 3/4 length pose came in.
The plain back with just this centre logo is also an 1860's style, the palette would indicate the photographer probably colourised also.

Thanks Jim.  Interesting.  I have another photo that i think is a similar era where the edges of the lady's dress are noticeably blurred I think for the reasons you describe.

David - just wow!  Fabulous colour choices.  Love the shawl.  i have a coat that colour!  And the flowers in the vase... you hardly notice them in the original but now, there they are brought back to life.

Thank you very much for taking the time to colour it.   :)
