Hi Cjay,

James Potter died 16th April 1839 aged 64
Wife Janet Wilson died 28th November 1831 aged 50

Their stone (like all the others) was removed in the early 1960's to enable the Churchyard to be landscaped.

The above MI cpmes from East Stirlingshire pre-1955 MI's by John Fowler Mitchell & Sheila Mitchell.

The attached photo shows what it would have looked like when all the stones were still there.

On checking further .....

There was another stone in the churchyard and appears as though it probably belonged to the same couple, the MI was:

1836  James Potter & Janet Wilson.

The way the Mitchells surveyed most churchyards was left to right and by row, so possibly these stones were very close to each other.

The year inscribed could represent a year of death of perhaps one of their family or was purchased in that year by James after wife Janet died. Who knows?  ::)

Hi Ann
Just to say thank-you for the info on the Potters,  I had no info on Janet Wilson, was there any more Potters buried in the churchyard, I'm also looking for Lewis Potter, the family I am told may have came from one of the surrounding parishes eg Larbert  Polmont or Airth
Thanks for the wonderful info

There are one or two Potters in various Churchyards, but they're mostly women who's name would subsequently change to whatever.

Found Lewis & his wife for you in Airth Churchyard (from same publication).

MI:

1832   Erected by David Higgin to Janet Higgin
Who died 25th June 1877 agd 75, wife of
Lewis Potter who died 13th October 1881 aged 80

The stone must still be there (and be reasonably legible) as it's listed on this site: http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/1.pdf

It would appear that Lewis's day and month of death is visible but not the year as that's missing from the index.

There's a couple of other Potters listed also on the same site.

 25. LEWIS POTTER - International Genealogical Index

Hi Anne
Thanks for you time,

No 24 + 25  I agree Banns and Marriage
No 40 Parents Thomas and Elizabeth, Thomas b 1781 on the 1851 Census says he was born at Larbert, so I think a son
No 43 parents James and Jean,  James b 1775 I think was also as son
38 Lewis and  Mary Lewis I think this one needs further research, but could be a son

Both Thomas 40 and James 43 both called their first son Lewis, which is in keeping with the Scottish naming of children

Many thanks again, will keep on searching

Hello,
James Potter (26 Nov 1775-16 Apr 1839) and Janet Wilson (4 Apr 1781 - 28 Nov 1831) were my gx3 grandparents and I have a huge amount of information on this family if you want to message me with an email address

This from Local Antiquarian Notes and Queries reprinted from the Falkirk Herald Vol 1 - (James Love Falkirk 1908)
James Potter - born about 1775, began business as a wood merchant in Grahamston in 1801. In 1805 he married Janet Wilson, of Grahamston, daughter of a prominent residenter. Of their family, John Potter became the principal partner of Messrs John Potter and Co., London; and Lewis Potter, a Glasgow merchant, whose business career was brought to a close by his unfortunate connection with the City of Glasgow Bank failure; Alexander Potter, a Glasgow merchant; James Potter, of Glenfuir, who succeeded his father at Grahamston, and carried on the business till his death in 1890. Elizabeth Potter, daughter of James Potter, sen., married, in October, 1848, Andrew Lusk, head of the firm of Andrew Lusk and Co., and Lord Mayor of London from November, 1873, till November, 1874; M.P. for Finsbury, 1865-85; and created a Baronet in 1874. Sir Andrew was born at Ayrshire in 1810, and bids fair to live to see his hundredth year. It should be mentioned that in 1834 James Potter was elected a member of Falkirk Town Council. He died at Grahamston on 16th April, 1839.
According to the Alphabetical Index of the Lodge, James Potter became a member of the craft in the year 1806.
