Galway, Cong or Kong
« on: Wednesday 06 October 10 08:33 BST (UK) »
A couple of my ancestors were born in Galway: in 1862 and 1867 respectively. Later English censuses (the family went to live in Liverpool from the 1870s onward - they originally came from Liverpool and went backwards and forwards from Ireland to Liverpool a couple of times in the 1850s and 1860s) show these two people shown as born in "Galway, Kong" or "Galway, Cong". Does anybody know what this means? The children's father was a land broker/agent and it seems that he worked either in Galway or County Down (Belfast, Grey Abbey) while in Ireland.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Bryan

Cong is a town in south County Mayo, right on the border with Co. Galway and near to Lough Mask.

For details after the start of full registration (1864) you could search the civil BMD Index.. for earlier records you will need to research parish records (if these exists) - see : Introduction to Irish Records
