Help with date
« on: Wednesday 06 October 10 05:28 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate others thoughts on this picture, the original I believe was found in a frame.

Appears to be a combined photo/ painting - the colouring is as it was found.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?
Any ideas about date ?

Many Thanks
Linda

Hi Linda  :)

How large is the photo?

It looks like a photo that has been painted over - these were popular (in enlargement form) from about 1900 to 1920, but could have been made from any photo taken during or before that time.  There's not much to date your photo unfortunately, as children were often dressed like this all through the 19th and into the 20th century.  My guess is, though, that the photo is contemporary with the enlargement/painting and is probably early 1900s-1920.

I wonder about that leg sticking out over the top of the skirt - it looks like someone got that wrong!  ;D

Cheers
Prue :)

... the positioning does look a bit awkward, one arm looks a bit out of place as well... think the sash makes the leg look like it isn't under the skirt .... do you have any ideas if it is a boy or girl Linda and if it is family?  ... I'd have to bow to Prue's opinion on a date!  :) mare

The photo was found in a coal shed with photos of my Gt Gt grandfather, my Gt grandfather and my grandmother who died 1893. Must have been well framed to survive. This was the only one that was coloured.

They only had sons but one died 1892 aged 4 years - his mother's photo was pre 1893 so it could be him.  I have photos of all the others as young men. The first girl in the family was born 1909 to one of the sons.

Hello Linda
Impossible to say if this is a girl or boy as they dressed them the same at this age.
The fact he/she's dressed in a smock tied with a sash would indicate Prue's date but I would narrow this to 1910-20.
