hi  Alice was living in Caersws in  the 1891 census for wales,, she married James john Mills at The Primitive Methodist Chapel in Welshpool in sept 1905.her father was John Walker who is supposed to have died when Alice was a baby.Alice was christened in 1897 when she was about 14 years old.In 1901 Alice was working for  Dr Maldwyn Price in Welshpool as a servant.I cannot find any records for her parents marriage or Alices birth,,so have hit the proverbiable brick wall !!Alice was an only child ,i was told her mother had a baby boy who died at or shortly after birth,, but i havent a clue whether this information is correct. many thanks

Hi

There may be a possible birth in Manchester, March quarter of 1884. Ref 8d p 228 for an Alice Walker.
You could always get the GRO to check against the fathers name during the ordering process - if it is the wrong one you at least only lose half the fee paid.   Problem is that the outlying areas of Manchester are differing reg districts so if she declared Manchester just for ease then the search widens.

I cant see an Alice Madeleine or a variation of the name being registered.

It may be worth going backwards first to go forward using the marriage certificate details of Alice Walker to track any witnesses and father further back.  If the father died whilst Alice was in infancy you may be able to match up details between a death certificate and information from the marriage certificate.

hi, Mair,i have torn my hair out trying to find all this information lol,i cant find any trace of alices fathers birth ,marriage or death certificates, all i have is his name.i have tried to trace the witnesses named on the marriage certificate without any luck.I begin to wonder if alices mother was actually married !!!!,,i have even tried to put alices surname in under her mothers maiden name just in case.As you say Manchester is a vast district to search. i have tried to add a copy of the marriage certificate  but cant work out how you do it. best wishes Jean

Hello

Are you saying that you found her mother's name was Sarah (Butler) from the christening details in 1897? Or did that come from elsewhere.

Do you have evidence that the child in the 1891 census is yours?  Is it the one where she is a boarder with the Rogers family?

Have you tried to find out who the Edward and Kate Rogers were? Perhaps they are relatives.

Where is mother Sarah in 1891?

Was there any information on the christening details which might suggest that either Alice or Madeleine were names given to her in 1897 rather than at birth?

Hi,,i have the sarah butlers name from her death records and aother family members,, my uncles middle name is butler as well, which i believe was common practise to include a family maiden name as a forname,,.Alice in 1891 is definately my grandmother,, she boarded in Caersws while her mother Sarah worked at nearby Maesmawr Hall as a cook.I dont have the full christening details ,, all i know for sure is that she was christened in 1897 in Caersws on september 12th 1897 age given as 14 yrs,, she was baptised by Rev Kyffin Williams and it was the service of Adult Baptism. best wishes Jean

Hi, many thanks for all your help so far,,,  :) i suppose i will just have to plod on with my search, the only relative who would remember anything is my uncle (Alices son), but he is 100 years old and his memory for dates and places isn't what it used to be ::).my Aunty ( Alices daughter) used to have loads of photos and information, but when she died her son threw them all away >:(,  (long story,,bit of a family fued). I dont think the boarding house keepers are going to be of any help,,, i have tried the church she was christened in but cant find out who the vicar is at the moment,,i e-mailed  the person who is listed on a church site but the -mail was returned" not sent".Back to the drawing board for me i think,,,,,, i will not be beaten ;D
