Marriage A.C.Baynes at Liverpool ?
« on: Thursday 07 April 05 23:23 BST (UK) »
Adam Clarke Baynes b 1805 was a bookseller in Liverpool. He is believed to have married Mary McNicoll. They were both Methodists. In fact she was the daughter of a Methodist Minister. Their first known child was recorded at Lime Street Baptist Church 1st Nov 1832.
Date and place of marriage is unknown.
Does anyone have any ideas ? Thanks

Baynes: Do you have a Robert Moss Baynes b abt 1850 in yr tree? Married Elizabeth Davies.

RE Mary McNcNicol - I have 2 in my tree but different dates to yrs and one is only Mcnicol by marriage.

I am struggling with a  Liverpool McNcNicol (Various spellings found) marriage too.  If you come across a John McNicol shoemaker born Co Derry b abt 1850, I'd be pleased to know.

He married Mary Dempsey(Dampsey?) and 1st known child was Mary McNickle b Liverpool 1877 .  At least I presume they married but have searched everywhere I can think of  for evidence.  They might have been Catholic (based on something an elderly aunt said) but Mary jnr later married in CoE church

Hi

They are not on the 1841 or 1851 name index for Liverpool.  Interestingly - on the 1841 index there is an Andrew Baynes also a bookseller aged 30 and wife Mary 25 - no children.  Both are shown as not born in Liverpool

Andrew is not on the 1851 but there are a number of Baynes who mainly seem to be from Ireland
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

Thanks for checking the 1841 and 1851 name indexes. Adam sold the business c1841 and disappeared. His main reason for doing so would appear to be a threatened court case over breach of copyright concerning a book written by James Fennimore Cooper.

The McNicoll family that I believe he married into is available at

Adam himself can be found here...

Robert Moss Baynes is not in my tree. I think he died in 1933. I do not know of any children.

Have you seen my Baynes listings at....

They should be of some help

What an excellent data base.  I did not have a birth or death date for Robert before.  My interest in him stems from the fact that my grandfather is listed on 1901 census living with Robert Moss Baynes and his wife Elizabeth.  Elizabeth Baynes nee Davies was his aunt.  The sister of my gt grandfather.  I haven't found any children for this marriage - but have not paid a great deal of attention to it as it is not my direct line.  If there were descendants and if they ever contact you through your extensice Baynes data base - then I have a lot of information on Elizabeth's line and can take it back to late 17th century.

I also checked out the Mcnicolls - mine are Ulster based

thanks again for your posting
